I suppose they add to the authenticity...

So, your great ancestor was a killer of whales? Any idea what kind that was?

The first one, whose fin you can discern, was a right whale. I am guessing that the more recent one was a finback. I figured that you wouldn't mind me posting these since some whales do eat fishies.

And who's to say the whale didn't die of natural causes... besides, all the witnesses (mysteriously) have since died... hmmmmmmm

Oh, those are plankton eaters, the pair. (I wondered what that fin was but decided on "rock.") It's small toothed whales and maybe humpies that you have to worry about. Despite that, I really do have a soft spot in my heart that's big enough for all the whales--even the 100' 100 ton blues that may never come again.

Don't get me wrong. 100year old photographs of dangerous blue collar work are amazing. No aspersions were intended to be cast.

Those tough old bastards went whaling from shore off Long Island, N.Y., all winter long, though the great-great grandfather Joshua did a couple of deep-sea voyages to the Pacific. A hard, bloody business.

That's it, I hope the 4WotA hate puns and take contracts--because that should get you on their list, Sam.

It made sense before, but I understand your reluctance to move anywhere (even Seattle) better when I see that sunset, especially when I also see the cutelets.

Tish! What beautiful kids! Amazing, thank you very much. What a MOM!

Bucket....your photos are amazing too! From what years are they? must have been around early 20th cen as best as I can tell. Great that you have them. Now, as an ex-GreenPeace camerman, and for "balance" I had to post this fair pic of a younger cowboyangel helping move Marshall Islanders off their irradiated atol in 1985, about 2 months before the Rainbow Warrior was bombed and sunk by the French CIA....

CBA, now that's beautiful. Fuck man, I had no idea.

As to the old pix, I estimate that the glass plate of the ship and partial woman's figure is late 19th century based on the other negatives in the set I bought. Interesting to note, 64 plates in that group were made by an amatuer woman photographer. I am getting a new kick-ass scanner this week and will post some more of these.

The first whale image dates to 1907, and the one with crop marks appears to be maybe 20 years earlier based on the clothing. One of these days I am going to do something with these negs.

I can't help it, here's a picture from the Big Island, a sunset over Mauna Loa that was a gift from Pele.
