Staying after "the event" to help clean-up, etc...

Talk about your camp or project's LNT plans (and MOOP problems) here. Discuss cleanup tips. Ask questions or share ideas on what works and what doesn't.

Staying after "the event" to help clean-up, etc...

Post by HughMungus » Tue Jan 25, 2005 7:35 pm

I might be quitting my job before b-man and would have an RV and would have time to stay there and help clean up.

What do I need to know?

DPW does the major cleanup. The direct email is [email protected]. Would help if you were in the main volunteer database, with interest in DPW and/or cleanup flagged as appropriate (see the main website). Policies vary from year to year on how volunteer help is used, weather may be a factor, bla bla bla. We try to get a lot done in the first few days after the event, and it would likely be no problem to stay a few days provided your status (and your camp) was known to the DPW crew chiefs and the Rangers.

DPW Clean Up

Post by Mayfield » Wed Jan 26, 2005 5:22 pm

Actually Bob, the best email address to use is
dpw-volunteers(AT)burningman.com
That goes to the DPW Volunteer Coordinator, which is currently me - Go Figure.

We would LOVE your participation in cleaning up Black Rock City. Clean Up lasts for a month after the event. Whether you can give a weekend, a week or the full month, your help would be greatly appreciated.

It's hard work picking up trash in the desert for 8 hours a day, but it is rewarding work as well as a great way to participate in the existence of Black Rock City. Without clean up, we could not continue to have the event. Besides, it's just the right thing to do. We should always work our hardest to Leave No Trace. On the other hand, we also know how to have a good time after work and the experience is one you will remember for the rest of your life.

Another benefit of staying for clean up is that you avoid Exodus and it's a great way to decompress. Experiencing the Black Rock Desert without Black Rock City blocking the view is really nice. Not that I mind the city, it's great for a week. We'll feed and house you while you're working for us, but make sure you're ready to work, slackers do not a DPW crew member make.

So drop me an email or go fill out the Volunteer Questionnaire located at:
http://www.burningman.com/participate/q ... naire.html
and I'll get back to you.

Agree with what Mayfield said -- the online volunteer forms are sifted through by the various volunteer coordinators to select core crew members for longer-term commitments, but often people may want to offer a few days or so before, during, or after the event and not get locked in with the long-term crews. Rangers and other groups, as well as artists with major works, often need help setting up early in the week of the event, and breaking down and cleaning up afterward. But you do need to have your contact info in the volunteer database to get on the various email announcement lists active before the event.

During the event, Playa Info in Center Camp is a contact point for volunteers and anybody who need them, with no requirement to be an "official" volunteer in the database.

I hope to have a "Adopt A Street" program this year. I adopted the 8:00 street in 04. Picked up a small bag of moop each morning. Used my scooter but found the early walk w\my cane was better. Might be a theme camp in the makings. hhmmm? Challenge you"committed" burners to adopt a street.

last year we arrived sunday morning at sunrise thinking there would be long lines but thousands were already there. One person told me he brought carpet for center camp and got to arrive early. We were hoping to volunteer carpentry skills and general labor this year - we live close by and were wondering how early we could arrive to help out - I'm thinking friday a.m.? We could also volunteer on weekends in august/septmember is this needed?

I did this on Esplanade between 6:30 and 7:30 (was camped at 7:00) I also found the morning and evening walks to be rewarding (and a great way to deal with a hangover while still being somewhat productive). Freaked people out too to see me cleaning up the street....obviously not a common site.

we do random recycle pick-up for people. sometimes they look at you like your on fire or melting. -(during the day). the wheel crusher/finger getter at recycle camp is just too fun.
