Temperature inversions over BRC during BM?

Post by dragonfly Jafe » Mon Jan 31, 2005 2:53 pm

any of you weather guru's out there know if the Playa can form a temperature inversion at night?

The reason I want to know is that in situations where there is a temperature inversion (and cool air) low frequency sound can travel up to 10x further. I am curious how likely this situation is to occur...(I am thinking not likely, since the winds would tend to blow it away...)

Not sure about an inversion but the playa can form its own weather is probably best be described as a small version of a Hadley cell. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hadley_cell

My guess is that you can get one, but given the normal playa wind conditions (intense) it would be rather rare because you'd get too much mixing. However, I gotta admit that it is possible, especially if you got a slow moving warm air mass at night with some cloud cover. Then the ground might radiate enough heat that would be trapped at a higher altitude. But I freely admit that I'm not an expert.
