Advice on Mutant Vehicles

Post by Orghua » Thu Jan 27, 2005 8:49 am

I'm considering building a mutant vehicle for 2005, and am not sure what base craft to use. I'm looking for something I can tow in on a trailer as I have no room at home to build a full size vehicle. Anyone have any experience with ATVs and how well they adapt to mutaytion?

Thanks,

Our first vehicle was a modified ATV. The biggest issue was going slow, took a good hand on the throttle not to "pop" it now and then. When this happened, the trailer would jerk around a bit. We also had issues with getting enough power for lighting - a pair of 12v batteries was not enough juice, and we only had ~2 hours of time (we had alot of rope lights though). It would also only hold 4-5 people max. We decided that the hassles were not worth the effort, and went with a real car as a base the following year (and discovered all new issues...) Let us know what you decide to do! Have fun, and Good Luck!

Fire, Fire!?

Post by mamagrrl » Tue Feb 01, 2005 2:14 am

So we're working on our (first) MV and the boy wants fire shooting from the 10' tall pipes (mounted on a 4' tall vehicle.)

What have DMV people generally felt about fire on art cars?
Anything goes?
No Way Jose'?
Only When We're Not Lookin'?

???

fire like you want is done regularly, but any car with fire has to undergo seperate safety checks. There have been fires resulting from sub-standard components, make sure you use hardware that is meant for this sort of stuff. There are some threads that discuss this - search on fire and you should find them...

Yep, seen the toasters out there...

Yeah, I've seen the fire cars out there, but didn't know if there were any suggested regs to follow (ie, flame needs to be above head level, etc) so thought I'd see if there was anyone who'd know first hand. It's gonna be crazy-work to fix out and didn't want to really dive into it if it was gonna be impossible to get past the dmv anyway.

People who use inadequate components go boom... and then they miss the rest of burningman. Too much bummer for one life. I'd rather be booming than bumming! So, good components for me and for you!

Fire on mutant vehicles is allowed but there a few rules to follow. Nothing extreme. More common sense than anything else. Depends on how radical you wish to go. I did the DMV fire safety inspections in 2004 and no doubt will be doing them again this year. You can PM me for any specifics you need.
Those who think they can and those who think they can't are both right.
