Like an Englishman in New York, only in a big scary desert

Post by jocelyn_and_the_goblins » Mon Jan 31, 2005 6:15 am

Hi chaps, another uk person clocking in. I'm on a round the world trip and will be culminating my travels at the Burning Man- I haven't got a clue how to get there or what I'll do about getting a shelter or finding a decent pirate hat and such like but I'll be in LA for August and was planning on cruising up to SF and making my way from there... reckon? Anyone willing to dispense yet more advice to my naive little britbrain, or alternatively do any of you like-minded souls require a companion to share a tent/ride/art project/hearty slap on the back/cup of tea with? I'm quite fond of castles and I know a song about flowers, and one about a whale.

Ok, I'll be a bit more specific... Are there any carshare schemes running from SF? If so, how do I find out about them? Would it be better to fly to Reno and sort things out there, albeit missing out on the great adventures to be had on the road? Does anyone know anywhere good to securely store stuff in SF, or Reno? I have no friends with me, or out in the desert (yet). Does this matter? I won't get taunted or forgotten or anything?

Here's a question about tents- how much would a tent fit for the desert cost stateside? Where does one get a decent pirate hat?

The mad dogs aren't coming. Looking forward to the sun though.

hey! first timer here too!

you can get a good tent for under $100 US. i posted a thread "found my tent" - was very happy with their service and prices. (for what to look for in a tent, search the forums.)

you could always go to a store once you get to the area, may be better because you can make sure all the parts are there and work, instead of dealing with a mail order co. on the main BM website there is an area with links to suppliers, and it lists some camping stores in the area of BM.

There is a link to rideshare on the main Burningman page. You can also post to or start an appropriate thread under the "share" section of this BBS. If you don't have a lot of gear, you can probably find someone to ride with, provided you're willing to share the cost of gas (you know...petrol).

Of course I'd be very happy to pay my share of petrol, or gas or whatever, it's merely the quest and the company I'm after. Thanks for the advice my friends. My insecurities have now been subdued somewhat- I've even volunteered to become a lamplighter. Is this a good idea for a newbie? I thought it sounded fun. Take care of yourselves, see you in August x

Shirley, you get to walk around everywhere and light lamps, and walk around again and refuel them the next day. Others will admire your white-frocked solemnity if they don't mistake you for a terrorist or Marley's ghost. No-brainer, I'd think.

And the pirate hat.
??? Surely leaving it at home and buying a crisp, new, tri-cornered crossboned, cutlassed beauty was the point. All aboard the ship of fools...

Hagey sounds like a good man; I'd feel bad abusing his hospitality though if thousands of people like me descend on his house again... we'll see. Thanks, love.

This IS a good idea for a newbie. The lamplighters have a big camp near the center camp cafe. You may or may not want to camp with them, their space will be pretty packed. You may want to camp a short distance away and just go to their camp to work, eat, etc. If you make a major contribution to one of their evening meals, you get to eat for six nights altogether. Plus, they're not Nazis about you working every single night; they know you came to have a good time and will work with you on your lamplighting schedule.

You're definately heading in the right direction though, as far as asking questions here on the eplaya. Last year, I solicited for RV-mates here on the eplaya and ended up throwing in on an RV with two really cool guys. Although it had all the makings of a potential disaster, it worked out well for all of us.

My advice? First of all, I second the rebbi's advice. Second, if there is anyway you can arrange to bring a bicycle or have someone, maybe one of the lamplighters, bring one for you, Bring a Bicycle! Having a bicycle makes such a huge difference in how much you can see, how far & fast you can travel, etc. You'll definately have fun without one, but you'll have way way way more fun with one!
...but it seemed like such a good idea at the time...

Dang, you could live like a king on the playa if you had 20 or 30 bikes to "gift."
