eplaya summit

Post by Rian Jackson » Mon Jan 31, 2005 2:27 pm

Well? We know that a lot of us won't be able to make it down in person. Are the things that we want to discuss here so that the message makes it there?

I'd really like a simpler format. It doesn't need to be as simple as the old eplaya, but I wouldn't mind something easier on the eyes. And sans smilies. I would even prefer to go without avatars, but I'm sure others will disagree.

Also, can it really be THAT hard to set it up so that eplaya tracks what you have and haven't read? Granted, i'm not a technologically gifted geek (just a geek in other ways) so I can't say. But it would make sorting through things much easier.

one that Spanky posted:

http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewtopic.php?t=8096

and the original one that Force posted.

http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewtopic.php?t=2098

Anyway these might be combined?

Spanky's thread is, as i recall, an announcement.

And AFFG's is from the last one. I think it's ok to let this stand for the 2005 summit. P'raps.

I really like the eplaya just the way it is- the colours, the fonts, the way messages are displayed and organized, the way the pm's work. This is the best functioning message board I have ever used- not that I am a message board fiend or anything, just sayin'.

I like it so much that I'm making a message board using phpbb for my business.

I like tribe better and they now have their IM thingy that is cool too. I mean I like the tribe.net user interface and features. I like the people here and the people there. Some here are also on there.

I have a renewed interest in helping to shepherd this BBS into the most effective community tool that it can be. If you want to PM me about anything or post ideas and thoughts here, I'm watching and I'm sure others are interested too!

I think Techno has already discussed fixing things we do not like about the site. They need someone who is proficient with php.

I used to think i just wanted it simpler so it wouldn't be quite so - um - eye-catching - at my place of business.

But I actually think that sorting through the visuals is starting to get to my eyes.

There's also the factor that fewer visuals force people to pay attention to what they write in order to communicate.

Here's something I'd really like to see: a way to post photos without hosting them on another site first.

Also, is it possible to link eplaya in-boxes with email addresses? It would be nice to be able to send some things from our own PM boxes to our emails, mostly for storage purposes.

Thanks for following this, AG. Wish i could flounce on down and make the summit, but it's a bit far.

Yeah, see, those are all features tribe.net has ... photo album ... private messages can come to your email ... etc. I don't know if their software is available or if it is something they did in house but the guy that runs the joint seems to be pretty darned burner friendly so far.

I would seriously look into what software they use and maybe use a scaled back version of it. What it also does is allows the creator of a thread to delete it. You can't edit your posts, but you can delete a thread. Of course the owner of the tribe can delete anything in it.

That feature set is what I would like to see ... but they are selling advertising to pay for all that stuff. If you want a photo album, it means tons of storage to store everyone's pictures and the cost of the bandwidth to send them every time someone looks at them. Pictures take up a lot more space than text. At least here when someone looks at a pic I post, I pay for the bandwidth it takes to serve it.

It is hard to do really cool stuff without a cash stream.

What a novel idea! How come none of us ever thought to ask for this?

But all seriousness aside ... it does remind me of a great idea that Gallagher had. Rather than the police trying to locate and arrest asshat drivers, why not allow the community to do it for them? Everyone would be issued a suction cup dart gun and when someone cut you off or otherwise was a fucktard in traffic, you shoot them with a dart. When the car with all the darts stuck to it comes past a cop, it is stopped and the driver is given a ticket.

Same thing with thsi device. When the 13th person "zaps" a certain individual, he will burst into flames. Let the community decide.

I think that's an interesting idea. If enough unique users (not usernames) tag someone as a nuisance to the community, they automatically get some privileges revoked, and an email telling them why. tips can be anonymous, but identified ones count for more. I like that idea. And the button to make them blow up thing.

What if I were to obtain 13 of these devices and zap you 13 times. Judge, jury, executioner.

Again, clearly the easiest solution if an individual bugs or is bugged.

Too much potential for abuse. It's better, IMO, to have them hidden from the reader as opposed to keeping them from posting.

Anyway, I'm sure all of us have earned the 'nuisance to the community' title from time to time. It's not violating the TOS, though. And i would rather have people use internal censors than have a policing situation.

Something that is a little bit more realistic  :

A broadcast/music button for the broadcasting eplayans.

So are any eplayans gonna be at the summit tonight to help make some serious contributions?

Heya!

Please check the Announcement thread http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewtopic.php?t=8096 for remote participation information. I will do my best to make every available channel of communication available and have all ideas heard.

We are looking for technical help (read: PHP, phpBB) and community help (read: policy, policing, etc). There will be two main agenda items: community and technology.

I beg you all to try to attend this meeting in some manner. Even if you just email me, spanky, at, well you know the domain name...actually, it's better if you email eplaya, at the same domain name. My filters will love you for it. I will incorporate your ideas into tonight's meeting.

I will be printing this and the other thread out for the meeting to discuss ideas.

Personally, I think the ePlaya needs a Flamethrower button where you can spray your fellow citizens with flaming liquid propane ;)

See/hear/chat you tonight!
~Spanky

I'm hopeful that the eplaya summit will be more civilized than some of the posts I've read on here. It's going to be interesting.
