Mardi Gras on the playa
Mardi Gras on the playa
Just a brief note, now that Mardi Gras is over, announcing that Black Rock citizens will be able to enjoy their own Mardi Gras on the playa in 2005 when SCARAB Camp hosts the Mardi Gras: Night in New Orleans Dance. Beads will be available that night (and all week) at our camp, and--as with our past community dances the last 3 years--the first 50 dancers get an attractively-labelled CD mix of the night's tunes. And as we did with our African and Brazilian dances, the music will be simulcast on Radio Electra so the entire playa can do dat thang, Boudreux!
Mardi Gras parades will also originate our of SCARAB Camp throughout the week, with floats, bead-flingin' (but no MOOP!), and hurricane shots for those on route. If ya see us, join us.

ps. in a break from years past, we may hold the dance on Thurs. night instead of Tues., to accomodate some of our core camp members who will be hitting the playa a little late this year. More info as the time draws nigh....

Last year the Catagory 5 Krewe from Nawlens threw their Marti Gras party Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m. I know four of us from BDC&WB came by and they had a helluva set up: fountain that poured hurricanes, nice hard plastic cups with their names printed on them (I still have mine), necklaces and beads. Very outgoing and we had a wonderful time but had to split around 5:30 to get back for the Meet & Greet (seeing how we were hosting it, we couldn't very well miss our own party). The biggest problem was that even though it was listed in the calander of events, their themecamp was not registered and it took us literally an hour to figure out where they were; if it weren't for dumb luck (someone at Center Camp overheard us trying to find them) I'm not sure we ever would. But my point is you may want to coordinate your efforts with those guys because they truly had their act together. Just a thought.
Category 5 Krewe in 2005 ?
I am in and of the Crescent City .....
Looking forward to returning to the Playa...
I would like to hear from other locals as plan-making begins ... potential ride-share, project assistance, resource procurement... et.al...,

Mardi Gras: Night in New Orleans Dance
None of us SCARABs are from New Orleans, but we will be able to provide you with a taste of home once you hit the playa.

ps. This year's dance will not be simulcast on Radio Electra, but discussions are underway to see if it can be done on BMIR. More info to follow. Also, the dance will definitely be on Thursday night this year, 8-10:45pm in SCARAB Camp (which will be a listed theme camp). We'll have da beads and da greazy tunes.

I told this missus about this and it damned near brought tears to her eyes. We are unabashed Mardi Gras sluts, dancers, (historians), masquers and revelers.
We will be there, c'ept this year I'm bringing my washboard but I promise not to play it in your camp. (I'm not sure if I'm the -only- west-coast hard rock musician that plays a frottoir, but I'm one of 'em.)
I'd hump a narc for bawl'd crawfish right now.
THANK YOU for bringing your theme camp. Bon temps!

I have about 5 pounds of Mardi Gras beads that I bought at a thrift store on an impulse because they are shiny. I would love to contribute them to a Mardi Gras party. If you finalize the when and where and e-mail me, I will turn up and bestow beads on you and your guests. It's grizzytove at gmail dot com.

Mardi Gras is like Burning man....Every year I want to go back! I went to three consecutive Mardi Gras in the eighties, and events have conspired to prevent me from returning since... I have to settle for playing my Dirty Dozen CDs and cooking some Zatarains.....
Somewhere I have a doubloon with a portrait of some Louisiana law enforcement official in his stetson- Looks a little like Larry.
