No,no,no...

1/4" dia. clear plastic hose.

Carpal tunnel ... I do have to say, all of this is making me think a lot about other work.

I worry about this (along with all the other stuff that could happen) in my trade pretty often too.

I decided a long time ago that what is fun for me to do for a living leads to rotator cuff problems, broken bones, sun exposure, possible drowing, BF exposure, death from falling, death from car crashes, death from gunshots, death from knives and other objects, death from death, hanta virus, belligerent people, cataracts, arthritis and other maladies. Yep I hurt sometimes when I get up but I still get up because it's fun. If someone has legitimate workplace issues, the human resources department is the place to start.

Yeah, I'm beginning to wonder about my longevity here. Because these last two years sitting at a desk truly HAVEN'T been good for me (mentally or physically - I can't say you guys have kept me sane, but you might have kept me from going postal) and things aren't likely to improve. My body wasn't meant to be in one place for so long.

I'm pretty ok with impact injures and such. Like, there are worse things than being shot. Depending where you're shot, and with what, I'd venture to say that things like tendonitis are often worse. The psychological impact of contact pain and not being able to operate your body properly just sucks.

I miss warehouse, construction or heavy machinery work from my past sometimes. There was a lot less pressure and it felt good sometimes to put in a hard day's work. You'd come home sore as hell, but feeling good about yourself.

Now I have CTS. Me. I would never have fucking thought that this could happen to me. Plus I have deadlines, deliverable, receivables, schedules, etc. I make decent money being a corporate whore, but sometimes I want to give in to the 'Wild Fuckits'. Cash in EVERYTHING. Quit the job. Buy a nice touring bike and have just enough stuff to put in the saddle bags. Spend all the cash I would get from selling everything plus savings, and ride out til' I die. I don't mind living on the road, so I could probably spend the next 20-30 years seeing all there is to see.

But no. I'm a fucking whore. I'll work til I'm 52 and then retire on Intel's dime. Maybe get the bike then, or just take the Miata out.

Fahshizzle.

There's something to be said for physical work. Work hard, sweat, get grubby, use large muslces instead of small ones, avoid office politics, and then go home.

Offices suck the life out of people.

True. But read Rivithead and see how factories can suck the life out of people. My guess. People are complicated and need to do both. Or all. Head, body, heart, and a lot of chat.

Trust me, I've worked light machinery and assembly and such, too. And that can kill you, too.... (actually, light machinery and assembly often require a lot of wrist work too.) The difference, I find, is in how much your mind is allowed to wander. And, depending on the specific job, how much you're allowed move.

Actually, come to think of it, door to door canvassing was one of the better jobs I've had - you were always moving and so you got plenty of exercise, you had to learn a bunch of stuff to have any credibility, and you could go home with your conscience intact each day.

Rob, any tips I can pass along to my bro about continuing in the computer world with CTS?

Rian,

Tell your brother to try a touch pad vs. the mouse. As I have moved further and further from command line and more and more into click and drool I found that the wrist movements required by the mouse bother me. The separate touch pad requires only finger movement and the wrist stays in place.

Any chance of his paying for a private ergonomic assesment or having his doctor rant at hr or calling in osha. (Not that they haven't gutted the ergonomic rules at osha) If someone they listened to pointed out that workers comp might be more expensive than just giving him the assesment. Is there a family friend lawyer who might be able to send them a letter pointing out the error of their ways? Show them the stick, and they might remember their own best interests. Don't go into full power struggle mode, though that will only make them stubborn.

Adn stand up once an hour. Do those exercises that I always forget. I think a two pronged approach. Take care of himself AND nudge the idions.

I like that word (a former typo) "idion."

Yes. The obvious things are the ergonomic keyboard. Adjusting your chair/bench height to optimal, get a keyboard and mouse pad for the wrists. But these are the obvious ones.

Here's the unobvious ones that actually made 5 times the difference that the above.

Avoid all vibrating things that you hold onto. If he has a motorcycle, don't ride it or make sure to use heavy, padded riding gloves if he has no choice. Don't grip anything that vibrates like sanders or jigsaws.

Wear wrist braces at night. This is probably the one that helped the most. When you sleep, you oftentimes have you hands at odd angles. This compunds the issue since your hand is at an odd angle for hours. If your wrist is straightened during sleep, it gives your body a chance to recuperate.

Get a squeezy ball. You need to gently work your wrist every once in a while. DO NOT get something tough, like the metal wrist strengtheners at a weightlifting shop. They make cheap little gel filled balls covered in fabric, a little smaller than a tennis ball. It feels like squeezing some tough Jello. Keep it by the desk and roll it around in your hands, squeezing it gently for a few minutes every hour or so.

Celebrex. While there is no real data to show that anti-inflamitories help in treatment of CTS, I have found that a daily regiment of Celebrex helped out immensly when my CTS flairs up.

Mainly, find ways to keep it away for about a month. It will come back, but if you can get it down for a period- it usually stays away for a while.

You know those little clangy "tai-chi" balls that you twirl in your palm? Those are just about the best thing for preventing and treating CTS.

Seriously. I hear you on the vibrating things. I've had to put the toys down for weeks lately because they do too much damage. Driving long disances in an old car is really painful, too. I'm usually having some serious flares by the end of a trip.

And i don't even have CTS, much.

Oh, and fishy, hiring someone's not an option (no money) nor is a lawyer friend (we don't associate with them, for the most part.

Just brains storming. Either of those services *might* be avaliable low cost with some digging.

You know what is a stupid work annoyance for me. When parents get pissy at me, after I ask thier child to get off the counter. I'm doing it for thier safty and for my continued employment.

This little girl today climbed right up on to the counter, Standing on it.. with her hands dangling over the top on to the doors that we open and close to get into the ice cream. Image

So I asked nicely.. really. "It would be so nice if you got down from there. I just need you to be safe ok?"

The parent got all huffy with me. Like I physically abused her kid some how.
WTF bitch? You allow you kid to climb all over our shop like its a playground and you get mad at ME?
Sorry my shop is not a playground. And you would know that if her little angel would of fallen from there they would of sued the shop. For it being unsafe.

grrr

I have found that doing both labor and brain work is the shit. After a few days of excersizing the noodle, it's great to go lash or unlash a few bays on a container ship. Now that will make you sore, all good though.

I have labored with the best of em, the key is taking care of yourself. Consuming healthy stuff and excersizing. The benefits are many.

I can vouch for the glucosamine sulfate, it does work.

I totally agree on the blackberry thing, sheesh, is this the eighties or the 21st fucking century?

Can someone please explain to me why bosses are so goddamned stupid that they don't understand that phones are a much more efficient way to communicate? Yeesh.

Had a boss like that a while back, who was so tight he wanted me to pay for my own work celphone and was trying to irritate me into getting it. It became very therapeutic to ignore his repeated messages in order to show him how inefficient (and unsafe if I were driving) texting was.

Helped that the messaging service sometimes wouldn't deliver the message until hours or even days later sometimes.

He should have been embarrassed by my having to pull over and use a payphone to get directions to the colo site. We were in telecommunications for crying out loud.

Kinda like a surgeon showing up wearing a fur breechcloth and using sticks and sharp rocks to do his work... it might work, but dang
