My Guru ordered me to attend to the sense 'I am' and to give
attention to nothing else. I just obeyed. I did not follow any
particular course of breathing, or meditation, or study of
scriptures. Whatever happened, I would turn away my attention from it
and remain with the sense 'I am', it may look too simple, even crude.
My only reason for doing it was that my Guru told me so. Yet it
worked! Obedience is a powerful solvent of all desires and fears.

like the belief that recycling your trash is good for the environment, we see the notion of enlightenment equally prostituted (not that there's anything wrong with prostitution) ...

enlightenment - it's just one more thing to hold over the head of someone else. see! see! i got it! i'm siddhartha - i'm the enlightened one... oooh learn what i've learned.... ohh ahh - when you get here, we'll have a party about how much we've unlearned. we'll look down the mountain and see our followers.

i only recycle cans, which is radical and will get you looked-down on by your housemates, as they pick your plastic bottles out of the trash... as if to say, look SIR, you are not in-line with what we all know to be true for the goodness of earth and us.

so that extends pretty quickly to the notion of spirituality. it's not a long way to go - from recycling is bullshit to spirituality to 9-11. but you have to unlearn what you have learned, which only someone like yoda would try to stick you with. i mean, who is this guy? do you trust him? i don't really.

but i do know that recycling is bullshit, an if recycling is bullshit, you have to agree that god is dead.

that's all i'm saying.

Great book. As is his newer one, "The Wise Heart".

I absolutely love him. I saw him speak in NYC last year, and I just did a silent meditation & yoga retreat @ Spirit Rock.

He embodies the heart chakra more than any human being I've ever met.
