I've done social work with this population for fourteen years, done rehab counseling and am in training to be a therapist at the doctoral level with at risk populations. Seen every stupid, ugly and wonderful thing these populations can offer. Yes, they are people and hearts go out to them and their situations.
Rape, assault, murder, theft, abuse of self and others, destructive use of drugs and alcohol, lack of responsibility to others. This is what some fraction of the population have known all their lives, from both ends.
Move the more unfortunate elements of this population into an environment where there are esentially no limits on the ways they can try to indulge themselves, without their understanding the spirit of the community, and people will get hurt.
You will also be exposing people with drug and self control problems to the very drugs and alcohol some of them should be in treatment for. And, BTW if you think any parol officer in the world is going to allow someone on their caseload, this includes spousal abuse, ex cons, addicts on court ordered testing ect, ect, to go to BM, you are truly insane and out of touch with reality.
If you want to help them, work towards getting them the long term services needed to make their lives successful, not paying for a vacation in what for them is a dangerous and alien way of looking at the world.
On a much more selfish note, I have already seen enough violence, condoned, ritualized or not, and am distressed at having to lock my stuff up at the man already. Last thing I want is some identified con on meth cruzing around disoriented. And again, if you think you are going to control anybody once there, you are mistaken.
