Where can you buy UHT milk in SF?

Post by cineman » Mon Feb 21, 2005 11:22 pm

Even though I'm not big consumer of moo juice, I've found having real milk around on the playa can be a great luxury. It's useful for many purposes, from cereal to coffee to calming that stomach that's still churning from the night before. Of course, regular milk has a short life in the playa heat. But it seems that UHT (ultra-high pasteurized milk) would do perfectly. It's milk that comes in a small box and lasts for 6 mos. w/o refrigeration until you open it. When I lived in France, it was almost the only type of milk you could find. But over here, the closest I've found is UHT goat milk at Rainbow Market. Let me tell you -- goat milk does NOT taste like cow milk, especially in cereal.
So... Anybody know where to get UHT milk in the bay area?

P.S. YES, I've done the soymilk thing... It's not the same.

I'd be interested in finding some of that UHT milk, too. I can't drink soy milk...allergy or something to soy. Rice milk is kinda nasty too. I was thinking of powdered milk as a substitute, but it is kinda spendy.
Of course I'm not in the SF area, but I haven't seen any UHT around where I'm at. I don't think it's health food store material is it?
So the theme this year is like a giant camp out in the desert? With people bringing lots of shit from all over? uh.. -Marscrumbs

You can buy ultra-pasteurized milk in a lot of grocery stores, look with the boxed juices. Often it's flavored milk, chocolate milk, etc, but I've seen it as just plain milk, too.

Hmmm... Didn't think about the box juice section -- I'll try looking again. The people at the grocery store always look at me like I'm crazy when I ask where I might find it.

If I'm not mistaken, there are a couple of major western dairy distributors who sell ultra-pasteurized milk products, too, but put it in the refrigerated section with the normal milk. Take a close look at those individual-serving-sized milk products. Some of those are ultra-pasteurized, but refrigerated so they can be consumed immediately.

I've seen them in the commissary on base, in the section with the canned evaporated and condensed milks.

Boxed yoohoo too.

I find Horizon Organic has little sizes of milk containers that don't have to be refrigerated. I usually find it in the organic section of my grocery store. I know they also have a website.

Does your grocery store also have a section for inorganic foods? Silicon-based, for instance?

Funniest thing I've ever seen (almost): In a health food store: "Organic Salt."

My local Costco sells cases of the chocolate Horizon milk packs. I always pick up a couple cases as part of my Playa provisions and I also gift them out to my neighbours and campmates.

Would gift them to strangers but the chances of the cartons becoming MOOP is too high.
