Write a paper on the ‘Burning Man’
event. Explain :
what the event consists in,
how it started and how it has grown up ,
what the theme of this year will be
where the event takes place
what the participants are supposed to present
what taking part implies (fees, reservation…)

I recommend that anyone working on this get as much information from the main site as possible http://burningman.com There will be links to history and to newspaper articles and to theme and to information on the desert/playa. Then if you have specific questions, post them on this thread and ask respondents to pm you with their answers.

One of the belgians asked me the 64 million dollar question: What is Burningman. my answer:
hyperfishy wrote:What is burningman? Sort of a party, sort of a rite without a religion attending on it, sort of a festival, sort of a vacation. We get away from our ordinary lives and become the artists that we also are but cannot express in our business and work lives. We work on our costumes and our gifts and our artwork and our camps all year, or part of the year at any rate in order to live fully for that one week. Supposedly in Slovakia there are people who get together once a year and camp and pretend to be plains indians (Lakota, Dakota, ect) and it's like that. It's like Mardi Gras (carnival/fasching) in a way--with costume and dancing and what might be called "decadence." It might be like roman saturnalia with gifts and going outside the proscribed social roles and drinking.

It's actually a very good question and there's never been a difinitive answer. Post that on the website and you'll start a lively debate.

(Hi MissNev!)

I have now gotten two requests for information. Apparently there is a teacher in Belgium assigning a class paper on Burning Man.
I've never understood this concept of writing/speaking about something that you haven't yet experienced for yourself.

It's like nuns trying to teach sex education, WTF???

Yep - I told 'em it's all about self-reliance, so in order to understand it, they'll need to write their own paper after doing their own research.

Hehehe... (But I point 'em at Google's translator, so they can read the website in German or French, though Flemish doesn't seem to be available...)

Unfortunately, I've read so much science fiction. . . Or even novels in general . . . And my mother was an anthropology major. . .

Put it this way--we can never fit 6 billion + people on the playa. So some sort of 2nd hand information is going to have to be dispursed. I guess.

Would there be any interest in a Badger / Kinetic thunderdome battle? If there's enough interest and a serious request comes down I'd consider it.

Also Spanky, hold those gold stars. There's several reasons why I have a blog...he's one of them. I took it over there so the eplaya new dawn idea has a chance at happening without me being part of any new problems...or so I hope.

Thank you. The gold stars are for dropping the sig battle, at least here. Whatever is between you two can be battled on your own time, on your own ground. I appreciate the efforts you *both* have taken, and hopefully will continue with, on the new-and-improved ePlaya. :)

Some are and some aren't Depends on the intention of the artist. Those that are burned are supposed to be registered.

I don't have a cite right in front of me but if I remember correctly anything that's supposed to be burned out on the playa, etc. is supposed to register. That way safety plans are checked, burn scar prevention is discussed, and they know who to come looking for if someone leaves a mess for DPW to clean up instead of being responsible for themselves.

REgistered with the art curators. In part to comply with our permit from the beaureau of Land Management (BLM) and to make sure that we don't leave burnscars and in part to make sure that we have enough fire safety people to make sure it doesn't get out of control and injure people. Many people do burn their art, but by no means all. Some art is created with the intention of being burned at the end of the event, and these are burned sometimes with a large ceremony, and sometimes in an intimate affair where they are dropped into one of the community burn platforms. Only projects made of safely burnable materials (wood, paper, etc) should be burned, for environmental, health, and safety reasons.
“We cross our bridges when we come to them and burn them behind us, with nothing to show for our progress except a memory of the smell of smoke, and a presumption that once our eyes watered.”
