South African seeking contacts

I live in the Cape and I've got my ticket for Burning Man this year. (First time going.) I'm going to spend some time in NY before taking AmTrak over to Sacramento and renting a car.

I'd like to get in touch with other South Africans that are attending to discuss the ins-and-outs and costs of taking 'large' installations to Black Rock.

Hi,
I'm from joburg and am going through, but renting a car in San Francisco and going through, what did you have in mind?

Well, especially being my first time, I'd like to contribute something.

Since I'm interested in maths and architecture I thought I'd build a dome. I know it's quite unoriginal, but I might be able to make a really nice one. I'm working on one using PVC piping with steal joints; and I've got dozens of metres of parachute material in a variety of colours.

But then I face problems of transport: The pipe is the bulkiest component so I'll buy it there, but where will I buy PVC in Reno? Do American builders even use PVC pipe? And in what diameteres? etc. etc.

Anyway, regardless of the specifics of the dome, these are the problems everyone will face when travelling with a large installment. And maybe doing things in local groups can help ease the difficulty.

Obviously small items like a collapsable tent and blow-up mattress are easy to take on a plane, but one needs to get creative to tackle the practical hurdles of art-installments-from-a-distance.

And then there's the "what to do with the stuff you buy in the States" problem after the event ... you can't take a dome back home on a plane. Would you throw away a dome? What if you plan to gift it away and no one could take it? If you do plan a dome, preplan disposal too! That would be one mighty piece of MOOP.

Remember that pipe in the US is likely to be in "english" units, not metric. (A nation of Luddites.)

Home Despot is cheap and ubiquitious. Maybe browsing the site can get you prices. I'm not sure I'd recommend them, like a lot of large retail concerns iin the states, they have a dark side. (cue heavy breathing) But for someone coming from out of country I don't want to make it too complicated. Be sure you have a design that you wont have to fiddle with too much once you get here, a lot of peeps on the domes threads are already making and practicing.

And AntiM is right about the MOOP (matter out of place/trash/detritus) problem, although it is not insolvable.

I certainly wouldn't want to be discouraging about building a dome, I just was pointing out an aspect that could easily be overlooked.

Lets also keep in mind when building the strength of winds that blow threw the playa. I would plan to make it indistructable. We built a shelter last year out of wood so that we could burn it before we left, getting rid of MOOP problem.
