This is just a little HELLO to all the e-Burners out there. I am so excited e-Playa is back up I can barely stop hopping up and down long enough to type!

Pirate radio station guy and potential e-playa camp persons, feel free to email me I got IDEAS! And a camp of empty structures just waiting for crazy folks to join us. We may even be able to design structures especially for your concept.

What? You dont like the violet?! I am crushed! It was my plan to do an entirely violet camp and force everyone who entered to strip and be painted the same colour so we could have a purple camouflage experience. Now my dreams are dashed...

Okay, so what's your plan? I have a BIG piece of canvas in the form of a ~100' circle around my tower that needs decorating. Just so long as your plan includes space for my newsroom message-kiosk, and a 100lb propane tank (that I hope someone can bring) I'm easy.

Oh, and we'll want to leave room for the deaf-mute disco, too, won't we?

Badger, are you telling me those beautiful purple climbing flowers outside my apartment are FAKE? You really know how to kill a girl's delusions. Darn, and I was so sure those were real too... And the roses I saw at the park the other day. I guess I should have learned from Alice in Wonderland that the Queen can have those things painted at will. I am going off to sob into my cocoa now....

Oh yes, Aich! The canvas! Poor choice of words, i'm afraid. I was speaking of a *virtual* canvas. No pix cause it doesn't exist yet. "Blank" because the only part of the plan that's certain is the 50' or so of tower in the middle of a circle defined by space it's not a good idea to sleep in (in case wind/gravity wins), and the various stuff required to hold the tower up. (yellow is probably worse than purple, by the way.)

Since this "fall-zone" shouldn't have tents/etc. in it, it I'm thinking it would make a nice place to DO other kinds of artsy and/or communal things.

I'm not so good at artsy. I'm spending all my money on infrastructure, and hoping other people will want to make it pretty. The tower, electronics, and transportation of same are going to be about all my cashflow can manage, and setting up/running the radio station will require most of my time.

Got a mile of twine and a bunch of strings of xmas lights? If the power situation gets taken care of, this could be the center-support for a pretty neat little canopy of lights.

It could serve as a marvelous landmark for "events" -- easily among the tallest structures in BRC. I have some blinky lamps that I'll mount inside top to bottom, and maybe a big red spinny light for the top (if the power is there to run it.) that ought to attract truck drivers for miles!

Al, it sounds like you have a structure that could work in our camp (assuming we can get funding to build a camp - we're working on it). If you'd be willing to put the tower close to the front of the camp rather than the middle of a circle, it could work out well. We definitely have the "arty" side of things down as long as your tower meets whatever BM requirements there are, and the noise stuff etc. Since we're on spring break right now, and the concept was developed during finals, we are still in the very preliminary stages, but here is a pic of the initial brainstorm for camp layout. You can see there would be an area to the left or right ideal for a large tower. Wouldnt it be cool to put up canvas breaks around it, which would serve to keep people away from it (you know they're going to want to climb the thing otherwise) AND give us space to do some wild night-glow painting. (?)

As for the power situation, we have been debating how we want to set this up for the entire camp. We're considering generators, but we absolutely HATE them, so my husband has been looking into building wind turbines or something. Would you be in a position to work with him on that? Do you have any experience with such a thing? Of course, if we could get esplanade space none of this would matter because we could hook into the grid. However, I dont think that it would be quite as much fun or require invention on our part. Since we're architecture students, overcoming hurdles and inventing stuff is right up our tree!

Even if you were to get an Esplanade space I am afraid you would find that a"power grid"won't be waiting for you.Think Center Camp is only area so blessed.Even though you hate generators you might look into the Honda Eu line.Incredibly quiet.Good luck

Thanks for the tip on the Honda generators. My husband had mentioned those so we'll check them out if the wind thing is a failure. I believe there is some sort of power source for camps on the Esplanade though. I recently did some reading about BM ("This is Burning Man" by Brian Doherty) in which the availability -or lack of- power was discussed in some detail. However, it seems like it would be more challenging and worthy of BM if we could use "green" power we generated ourselves. We'll see how close to reality the ideals can come! Hehehe

gotta tell ya that bm does not offer power to theme camps. even on the esplanade. only bm camps get bm power (info, cafe, dmv, etc.)

The only theme camp I know of who gets power from the grid is Hotwheels. That's due to Mr. Fixit's extraordinary contribution to help mobilize the specially abled on the playa. Speaking of which, he needs your help locating parts and scrap/broken/working electric wheelchairs for this noble cause. You can PM him and he will be grateful for your help.

How does one get involved with Mr. Fixit's assisting of those who need it? I would be interested in volunteering some time. Working with the disabled is one of the areas I want to specialise in (architecture --> retrofitting buildings). And since I'm in San Diego, what do I do with the wheelchair parts if I get some? If it's doable, I'll start my quest.
