I really think this scene needs a little jug band from about 40 years ago.

The Pranksters had this same problem in 1965 - we have the "fun" figured out, all we need is a house band. Anybody out there ready to step up?
ANYBODY?
Wow, a free form sensory overload. A little mood music would be just about the final touch.

Hmmm... The Dusty-Bottom Jug Band... I like it... Seen some really good bands come together from gigs like that!

I'm trying to hook up with a friend of mine to make a playa-proof accordian... if anyone can pull it off, he can... as long as he doesn't put any of his pyro goodies in it at the same time... >> wikkid grins << I'll also have my harmonicas (of course) and heck, there ought to be enough people out there to throw somethng together.

Only one problem... how can you do Bluegrass wieh no grass grows on the playa? (Not counting the turf installation... forgot about that.) Bluedust? Bare Alkali Jug Band? The Windtones?

Hummin' a happy tune, and all that kinda stuff...

FIRST:
1996 was the year Happy and AudioG almost got destroyed by a no-lights-night-driving truck-going full-speed-ahead, cleared them by maybe a foot at most. And that was camping in a respectably populated zone.

AND THEN SOME:
Was 2000 the last year for Tonka?

EVEN MORE:
I played jug-style music at BM in 2002 for the floating theme, we were the "Scurvy Bastards" , }{dammit}{

I realize I'm a little late to this conversation, but I'm having a hard time letting this slide: "Food court" is the most inappropriate analogy you could possibly come up with.

A food court is a section of a consumer temple (a.k.a. Shopping Mall) dedicated to consumption in its most direct physical form (i.e. eating.) Burning Man isn't a food court, it's a potluck.

Ask not about what Burning Man is offering you, ask what you are offering Burning Man. Or actually... ask both those questions. If either one comes up "I dunno," you've got some more thinking to do.

Sort of agree, and I am all for improving music experience

Post by EricMagic » Sun Apr 24, 2005 7:41 am

The music was not quite as good all the time as I expected. Bottom line it takes a lot of work even at BMan to get everyone to agree on things. I plan to bring a stereo system with some really good music next time. Some of the music was good at BMan, but it did not seem well organized, and more of an afterthought sometimes.

I suggest that we (dancers and techno people) start a small paper, or website, or ask for a section in the BMan newspaper that highlights specifically dance parties at BMan. Anyway, just doing that can take a lot of work and cooperation, and we may still not agree on what type of music is good or bad.

Anyway, no matter what the music type it should be intense, clean sounding, and not too loud to drown out other music venues. Almost, need a timing and location schedule for the larger music and dance venues.

ok, add to my short list of, umm, dislikes for the rave scene:

Just returned from a work weekend put together by the amazing DPW crew out on the playa and we spent some time mooping (picking trash out of and off of the playa). This could be a total coincidence but, the concentration of moop was particularly high where one of the larger sound camps resided. I knew there would be some shit out there but sheesh!!!

People (meaning everybody), get yer rave on, or not, but fukin please please please pick up after yourselves and lets look after each other a bit as well.

But if you put it that way, you make it sound like *everyone* should be bringing food (music). To go back to the mall analogy, I don't work in the food court. I work at S-Mart, in the housewares division. Shop smart, shop S-Mart.

I'll be doing a leetle bit of art and helping my camp host a couple events. I was also one of the slobs out on the playa this past weekend, and may possibly go out again for stuff like this. I have no fears as to whether or not I am offering enough.

And on a side note, as one of the moopers from the weekend, I don't mind the rave camps so much because they're high traffic areas and will wind up getting lots of junk. It would be nice if those camps tidied up better, but I understand, kinda. The people I want to beat down are the ones bringing GLASS out onto the playa, because picking up teeny bits of broken glass for hours on end is no fun.

That and pistachio shells. Those things don't biodegrade fer shit.

And the ciggy butts. (already mentioned)

I have nothing against music itself, or even any particular style of music. I just have something against a culture of 24x7 non-stop music and thats all there is.

I don't even have a problem with a couple of DJ camps and people that want to mix and spin or whatever ... but in moderation. Maybe sprinkle them all over the city with a 50 watt power maximum and 4-8 am as quiet time or something.

Or maybe a raid on a rave camp and give all the spectators wedgies or something.

OH MY GOD! Are you serious?!?! how many more rules and restrictions do you want to impose on Burners? There's already WAY too many restrictions. Restrictions like these hinder creativity, and the freedom of expression that BM is all about.

Personally, I can't stand alot of the "Rave" type techno and trance music being blasted... but I DO love alot of SICK EVIL DARK WICKEDLY GUTWRECHING Drum and Bass, with maybe some jungle in there too. Also, Industrial, some electro, and some downbeat chill electronica. So yeah, I agree with there being too much "Rave" music, and not enough of the other stuff! but placing rules on music hours and volumes and whatnot is pretty shitty. Just be respecful of others and you yourself will be respected. I think the golden rule works... even with Trance.. or breaks.. or techno.. or whatever.

Also, I have to agree with others on "if you don't liek whats there, BRING WHAT YOU LIKE!" Its not about what BM has to offer, its about what YOU OFFER TO BM!

It's easy to forget, too, that ravers are people just like everybody else (whether one thinks there are a disproportionally large number of dickish ravers or not) and that we work at crappy jobs (sometimes 2), go to school, pay bills, etc. Ravers don't just get to play all the time and I think that may be indicated by the music that a lot of us listen to...We need to blow off steam like everyone else and Burning Man is a great place to do that.

I don't know how often John or D6 get to go out and party anymore, but I can tell you that the only time I get to go out is when I have a gig - otherwise, I just can't justify spending the money and the time on raving...I have work and school and family and house cleaning...I get a whole week to spend in the desert, though, when I don't have to worry about anything but relaxing and shaking my ass if I want to and I NEED that. And so I rather appreciate the rave scene. I think (and it's been said already) that instead of hating and bitching and pissing and moaning, maybe we should just try to help people be more aware of their surroundings and be more considerate of others and of their own actions.
Thanks to Addis, I had more free time.

Amen!! And if it wasn't for Burning Man I'd never had the chance to hear top DJ's like Sandra Collins play live...which was without a doubt the best dance set I've had the priviledge of listening to. She was so good that even with a bad case of playa foot I couldn't help but dance. So for those of us in the Red states who didn't have satellite radio until recently BM's dance / rave scene is a godsend.

If this thread is a Vietnam microcosm, does that make the ravers the VC?
