remember that this E-playa and not THE-playa. There is, in my opinion too, a greater amount of nasty attitudes going on here than on the playa. I had an accident too this year and I thought everyone was great helping me pack, giving me support etc. I view self reliance as a community as well as an individual responsibility.heat wrote:I find it interesting that there is such an undercurrent of unkindness in many of the replies. It. Was. An. ACCIDENT.
Why no crutches at Medic?

Shhhhh. I was trying to subtly imply that. Sh*t does indeed happen. And you can't be prepared for everything. (I'm just saying that because there was no room for the Meteor Umbrella in the truck this year.heat wrote:I find it interesting that there is such an undercurrent of unkindness in many of the replies. flackmaster - thanks for that note. Even you had an accident, eh! (easy, kiddin around here). I guess you are the master of flack - sure got me going!
I like the concept of self-reliance extending to a community - and it's true, it's more prevalent on The-playa than here. I wonder why?
Talk about self-reliant - our bodies are amazing. Before all the damage had been sorted out, my body had kicked into healing mode during this month, and thus I escaped surgery (so far) and casts. It will still be a long rehab, but the body is a good model for both taking care of itself and when needed, using other body parts/community members to kick in for awhile.

Ahahaha! I love it! The meteor umbrella reminds me of a Halloween costume I wore with my babies when they were young once to protest the nuclear plants - we were a Nuclear Family, all raggedy and green and carrying a melted-through umbrella.

yeah well, it was an "assisted" accident...sorta like "assisted suicide?" ...but I figured I have already been posting about that enough.
may we all heal quickly.

Jeez, for some reason I hadn't put you together with the bike assault....dduhhhh...I'd heard about it but haven't had time to surf the Eplaya lately.
Well, you certainly have tons of life-fire (? ? made it up...) and offers of support; I'll bet you'll heal well.
Good healing wishes to you and your limb (and by extension the community)!!

Re: crutches
That's really too bad. When I sprained my ankle, not at Burning Man, I got crutches, an ankle brace, a video, and a bunch of brochures telling me what exercises to do to prevent it from happening again. Guess I got the extra special treatment.Flackmaster wrote:oddly enough, most hospitals don't issue crutches. They generally tell you buy or rent them at the pharmacy. It would seem a resonable request to have the REMSA medical tent at center camp keep a few pairs in stock.Icepack wrote:Just a guess.. if you had been injured seriously enough to be taken to Reno in an ambulance for xrays etc, you may have gotten crutches from the hospital there.

When this post started. I posted that I would buy used sticks and repad them. I went on to say I would make them avaible to Med staff. Also if they did not use or want to store them I would be happy to store then from year to year. This would a gift the BM. If you can't follow my lead ok. But there is no need to flame if you are not reasonable enough to follow. Gifting can come in many ways.

Wow!! All for free, too!! That's neat! It'd be great if everyone in the world just gave out free stuff all the time!! Then we would all have all this neat free stuff in our houses and we could bring it to Burning Man and then when we expected the med tent to have the free stuff, they would have it because someone gave it to them for free!!! I may have to fly to Burning Man next year, so I don't think I'll have room for the crutches.

I'm sure that they are adequately supplied with ice and slings. Wheelchairs are a different matter, I suppose. email [email protected] to ask.Icepack wrote:Do they need Icepacks? or slings? or wheelchairs?heat wrote:hello all - especially unjon harley- the lovely folks at med camp have asked me to share that any interested in the crutch project or with offers (such as unjon) please email them at [email protected] .
Now if you are volenteering, Icepack, the standard is EMT with a year's agency experience.
I can no longer keep track of the undercurrents on this thread.

Hot Wheelz Camp
Sorry for the late reply. I just saw this thread. We bring several pairs of crutches, canes and wheelchairs to Burning Man each year for use by Burners with mobility challenges. I also designed special hand-controlled Mutant Vehicles for use by fellow Burners in wheelchairs. I will contact Med Staff and inform them about the availability of these items. I am surprised that they didn’t already know since we have been on-playa for the past 4 years! We have been a registered and placed Themecamp for 3 years offering a wide variety of specialty services to disabled members of our Community. Any questions please email me. Also, we have an urgent need for any electric wheelchairs or parts! Mr. Fixit

Whilst cruising around Goodwill stores and garage sales, I've seen pairs of crutches and canes. So, I will also keep an eye open and pick some up if they are available.
Will the Med tent be able to store these items and then keep them or will the person donating have to take them home again? I mean what if they ended up with a hundred pairs of donated crutches? Would they take them all?

So the theme this year is like a giant camp out in the desert? With people bringing lots of shit from all over? uh.. -Marscrumbs

DPW had twenty odd pairs of crutches on Ye Olde Ranch, last time I looked.
Think they were leftunders from an art project.

ESD does have storage space for crutches at the ranch, so donations not used one year, will have a home until the next.

Crutch donations
Man, it's been awhile! I am finally off crutches and rehabbing. I had doubts I'd be this active again, but the body is an amazing thing. I'll dance on the playa yet!
Anyway, I will be back in touch with the burningman911 folks who said they'd set up a crutch donation effort. I'll ask them to post details on where and how, etc.
I wish I could burn one of my sets of crutches as closure..but that would be a waste and would rather donate them!
I still think it's a worthy effort. Some injuries are a lot more serious than they appear at first and some folks would be better off on crutches. Speaking from experience....

And the crutch drive is supported by ESD brass, for those of you who wonder.
Good to hear you're doing so well, and if this drive works, than something good for the community has come out of your pain and inconvience.
