Radically new themecamp placement layout
Radically new themecamp placement layout
Hey there themecampers.
Have you heard?
They're debuting a 'radical' new placement layout for themecamps this year! I understand they showed the map at Town Hall a few days ago.
No more themecamps in blocks 2 or 3 (next to Espl.),
some themecamps in 4 and 5,
some on the outer rings and
some on a few radial streets (4:30 and 7:30?)
...something about trying to get more folks to travel to the back streets and forge a stronger community. (which I took to mean, damp down on the yahoos, seeing as how they mentioned folks complaining about the high-yahoo factor..)
Got the news from a placement guy, so it's as reliable as it can be until a map is up.
Map's not up yet, but I heard it's ready to go.
I'm trying to decide how I feel about the news.

A calculation of sq footage per person in/out of theme camps could only give you a statistical average. And virtually nothing about BRC is average.
I'm not trying to be facetious. But allocation of theme camp real estate has to do not only with the number of people in a camp, but also with the nature of the camp's infrastructure and interactivity (as described in the theme camp application).
And square footage per person in unassigned territory is virtually unlimited, because a person with a requirement for wide open spaces could simply set up on the fringes of walk-in camping and be literally surrounded by open playa.

FYI: the above map is one posted a while back and there have been significant revisions made since that copy came about. In general the 4:30, 6:00 and 8:30 extension of the theme camps/neighborhoods are being extended back into the city as well as the 3 and 9 o'clock keyholes but so NOT take that jpeg as gospel seeing as more up to date drawings are available.
Just a warning.
Just a warning.

Def. saw the 'prelim' note, so all's cool.
It's different from what I had in my minds eye, when it was described to me.
I thought the whole band of themes would be pushed back two blocks, making a belt that runs blocks 4 & 5, from 2 to 8.
Instead, it's looking like a sunburst, kinda.
Love the 'community' idea with the non-linear streets...
But maybe more theme 'rays'?

You'd have the same "problem'" as before - everyone would go to the theme camps on the outside, and the inner loop (esplanade) would be the ghost town on the edge.
I wasn't sure I liked this when I saw it at the meeting, but the more I think on it the more it seems to be able to draw people in. The only thing I can see now is people flocking to 3,5,7,9 spokes to get away from it, where before it was easier... then again the city ought to fill better.
My question is this - do they have any plan to go to 11:00 - 1:00 as the crowd swells? I can see this coming eventually.

Just add another ring to the outside. This will add an enormous amount of space. I think I mentioned something about calculations of space earlier. Maybe I'll get a chance to work on it tonight.Bay Bridge Sue wrote:My question is this - do they have any plan to go to 11:00 - 1:00 as the crowd swells? I can see this coming eventually.

OK. So by my calculations (which are probably off by some) the total area of the city is approximately 31,430,000 sq ft. Assume that 10% of that is consumed by roads, portapotties and other non-campable area and you get about 28,288,000 sq ft of usable space. If there are 37500 people, then each person has 754 sq ft of space available. I know in our theme camp we had about 25 people camped in a space 50 x 150. That is about 300 sq ft per person, but most of the space really was taken by the coaster and group spaces. I personally used under 100 sq ft. I had some friends camped way out at Sedna. I would guess they had a couple of thousand sq ft available per person.
Sputnik nailed the answer. Anticipated growth last year was dealt with by inserting several radial roads rather than further closing in of the circel (i.e 1:00 and 11:00 additions). My question is this - do they have any plan to go to 11:00 - 1:00 as the crowd swells? I can see this coming eventually.
