Let't take this to the logical conclusion and fold time so that while there are always a few people on the playa year round, they all are at the event at the same time. This ought to make is possible to have the entire world attend.

[quote]OK, let's bring this one back home.
Late last year I proposed abandoning the large semi-circle in favor of many smaller circles arrayed across the playa.
Now, that would be radical.[/quote]
i think that would be WICKED. i've always imagined what it would be like if another city / festival occured simultaneously out on the playa, maybe a couple miles from BRC. a distance glow, each would be to the other. 12 o'clocks facing each other. a prettier fence at the perimeter. a gate. art buses transporting participants of each one to the other to visit. some people on foot. that'd be some crazy adventure happening.

Thanks Alienfry. BTW, you should uncheck the box below the post that says Disable BBCode in this post when you quote someone, or go to your profile and turn it on permanently.
My biggest concern with this idea is how to fill each 'town' with people so that one isn't overloaded and another too lightly filled.
Tonight I'll work on the concept some more. I believe that I know the size of the city (the pentagonal trash fence that surrounds it is described as being 7.5 miles in circumfrence)

I like the concept - looks like it'd work for the increased number of visitors to the Playa... and, as the villages grow, they'll overlap, merging with one another. Yet each would retain it's individual flavor... I think what I like best, tho, is it uses the entire footprint of the city pentagram - does away with the "big open hole" at the end. Altho from a visual impact standpoint ("framing the man") it's nice, from a logistical standpoint it's gonna be tough when we get to 75K inhabitants. As it is, it's been squeezing itself closed gradually, eventually it'll either have to close in or there'll be a whole rack of streets all the way out to 447...
Going with the village concept it will give more room for the growth that is pretty much inevitable. Plus... it looks nice!

OMG, if we ever get to 75K people we're going to need more space than currently is allocated out there. Maybe grow the pentagon a bit and move deeper into the playa. At that point you probably really have to be concerned with exodus. Might even want to spread it over 3 or 4 days.
Logistics are a concern in this plan. Basically you end up needing a service road that runs the whole perimeter. However, in some ways that isn't too bad. You tell tell people in cars to follow the fence and turn in when they come to the village they are camping in
I also envisioned each circular area being subdivided by 4 radial roads and then circular streets with a center clearing for major artwork.
OR
Each village could be pentagon shaped too with 5 radial roads and straight streets that follow the outline. Or even mix it all up. One village square, one triangluar, one round, etc So many possibilities for being radical here.
