Gift Quantity
Trying to get an idea of how many to bring... advice appreciated...
I presently have 3 cds with 100 copies each. With the amount of time remaining pre-event and the inexpensive cost of making them I can probably get another shitload put together.. but how many gifts do YOU bring?

Re: Gift Quantity
Each year we have increased the number of Playa Gifts we create, in '04 we brought 1000, and returned to the default world with about 200...
The more gifts you make, the more gifts you have to give out, the more people you get to meet...

When I do stickers I usually do 1500 and I find it difficult to pass them all out by myself so I will often give several hundred to various campmates to pass out as well.
Last year I think we did 6,000+ servings of chai (mostly during the FREE CHAI Revolution at Center Camp on Friday).
That being said, even if you bring 1, 5 or 10 gifts, they will be greatly appreciated.

cool.. good info so far..
I might actually shoot for 900 or 1200 cds. They are uber-cheap on ebay as are labels and sleaves.
So here is my concept-
I have created 3 discs entitled "Morning" "Afternoon" "Evening" with music appropriate for that part of the day. The morning disc has a fairly ecclectic mix of stuff ranging from the didgeridoo to electronica. Apropos for starting the day off, and mostly mellow. The afternoon disc will have music that is a little more aggressive to keep the pace up in the midday. The evening disc is by far the most aggresive and is meant for dancing and partying... Filled with what I like to call Music with teeth.
The concept of handing them out: I will be handing out the discs at the appropriate time of day - Morning in the morning, etc. They are labelled "Disc 1 of 3", etc. So if someone actually wants to try to get all three, they will have to either find me, or ask around to other people - possibly even strangers - to see if they might have other disks..
The idea is to give a gift that might create more interaction.
Thoughts?

sounds great to me!!! so, where will i find you??
good question though. i'm a first timer, so i have graniose plans of stuff that i could do. i'm probably doing one "service" gift (for many people, depending on my time and energy level) and a bunch of simple jewelry stuff that i already have laying around. and some bulk glowing/blinky things to share.

Great on the glow/blinky. they are plenitful ,but there's no moon this year and some people forget to wear them at night. I've ridden shotgun on a Emergency SErvices Vehicle, peeling my eyes to the right so that the driver doesn't run over some unlit moron on a bike who thinks that being in a pedestrian city means that you don't have to worry about safety around vehicles and races in front of a truck that's on it's way to an accident scene. (and god only knows what it's like on some of the more careless MVs.) (Yeah, it may only be 5 miles an hour, but even if we don't hurt someone, we'd still have to stop and acertain that--while some emergency goes on a quarter mile away.) Thank you.

I figure that since I have a "thing" for music, the best thing I can give is something that I took some time and put some thought into -song selection and arrangement of tracks, etc. Initially I was looking at buying crap and handing it out, but when I did a cost break down of that vs my cd concept I "dreamed up", I discovered that my "Big Plan" was cheaper, just more time consuming for the quatities involved.5x5 wrote:sounds great to me!!! so, where will i find you?? ;)

You will probably find me around the DPW camp at some point...
In my experience, making gifts on the spot adds a personalized element in addition to regulating the number that you actually make....I couldn't keep up with the requests for the aluminum widgets I was making last year, and will do more at-home prep this time but actually make them on demand so that when playtime arrives, I won't have homework.

Craft day aye ... although my pc is upstairs and the beading area is down in The Pit. I would virtually be running up and down the stairs for it!
I'm also painting like mad for the Home for Wayward Art; I've posted about it elsewhere. Basically a place to show, donate and adopt Bad Art, Lost or Found Art, Small Art, Amateur Art, Rescue Art, anything you like or dislike or don't know what to do with.
btw, I really suck at painting. Many pieces of Bad Art will need new homes, so plan on finding The Home! Likely in Hushville.

No puppies or clowns as yet; in addition to my own work so far I have a plastic lattice framed landscape from the 60s, two needlepoint floral thingies, a poster (found, not bad), one of those awful crewel pieces in an embroidery hoop, and a broken wooden inlay tourist plaque. I found some dreadful 70s works at the thrift shop, cyclists and sunsets, but they wanted $20 a pop! Ouch! I will raid my dad's house for my dead brother's ex-wife's painting of bunnies and bears at a luau. No one in the family likes it.
I could TRY to paint puppies or clowns, or a big-eyed clown holding a crying puppy with angel wings. Now you've done it, haven't you?
I've been promised a velvet painting of Joseph Smith, but I am quite certain that won't make it away from the Utah Burn in June!

Seems like a good thread for asking this question, so:
I'm bringing one dozen of those paper parasols. Like the kind you get in cocktails, but people-sized. They're coming to me as plain white and I plan to decorate them. Should I decorate them ON the playa, or before? I like the idea of having the personal on-the-spot element, but I'm figuring I'll be carrying at least one on me and just gift it off to the first person who looks like they need it. That method won't allow for much decorating...
Ideas?
