Tribal-Psi-Trance Help Needed!

Post by Orghua » Wed Apr 06, 2005 8:42 am

Hey y’all:

A while back some folks tossed around a list of psi-trance acts. I pursued a lot of them with mixed results. The greatest suggestion: Shpongle! Damn … this blew me away. I also liked Hallucinogen a bit and Medicine Drum quite a lot. Mutaytor is also one of my Burner favorites. Unfortunately a lot of the acts I investigated didn’t satisfy: i.e. Doof, Space Tribe, Astral Projection, Sun Project. Infected Mushroom was borderline. The thing is, the endless synthetic Thump Thump Thump bassline and homogeneous synthetic sounds of many of the psi-trance acts just doesn’t satisfy, which is more of a psi-house-trance thing. Good for raving, but not so great for listening at home or driving. I like ultra-funky tribal beats, and strange cerebral textures. Deep dark DMT inspired mixes. I like the use of acoustic instruments, especially cultural drums and beats, interspersed with trippy synthetics. Perhaps it is Tribal-Psi-Trance I am looking for? I want visions of ethnic drummers surrounding a mad scientist on a laptop in the jungle, while an ayahuascero dances with his potion, chanting healing songs, rather than images of some pimply high school kid crafting psi-trance on his laptop in his bedroom. Shpongle delivers! Does someone out there understand? I need Psi-trance for musicians, not psi-trance for ravers!!! Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Look into the "didgworks" series of cds... also look at some of the Nataraj cds. I have been delving into hybrid music utilizing the didgeridoo and varies electronic forms of music.. some really good stuff is out there.. I'll post a few more things tonight when I get home..

I'm a big fan of this record, not sure if he was inspired by Burning Man, but I love that it's called "Dust Devils". More Didj than electronic, and it might not be fast enough for you but I really like this record:

Not really Psy but Juno Reactor is very organic. Also not really trance but in the mood would be Rabbit in the Moon and Banco De Gaia. There is plenty of house that also falls in these lines.

Sorry bout that..

Two CDs that I really like are "Didgeridoo Groove" and "Didgeridoo Trance Dance" both available on Music Mosaic. "RaRe Elements" is a Trip Hop/Psy disk based around more Arabic Beats on 5 Points Records. One of my present favorites is a CD by the Dohl Foundation called Big Drum:Small World. Dohl FOundation is a side project from an Afro-Celt Soundsystem member - great stuff.

Enjoy the journey man. Feel free to look me up when on Playa - check in the DPW camp or drop me a PM pre burn.

John Kelly was here not that long ago. Made for a great time and totally had me aching for the playa.

A few days ago I heard Medicine Drum on NPR

Wow, what a flash back to what I considered the best days of Burning Man!

wonder if they will ever get the band together again and at BM
