While much of this is old hat to many of you, newbies might not know where to turn. Besides low-cost stuff at thrift shops, there are often internet resources for free stuff. Craig's List ( www.craigslist.org ) has a "free" subsection in their "for sale" area. While the main site is for the SF Bay area, if you have a look on the right side of the screen, there are links to many other cities. Some cities are more active than others, too.
www.obtainium.net is another site that tries to connect haves with wants.

Freecycle is another great resource - I got a fabulous carpet and some throw pillows for my shade structure that way this year.

Anything purple is mine. Anything else can be dyed or painted.

And may we never never never forget the dumpster dive. . .
Or the end of the yard sale.
We need a companion thread. . .

while watching
The old version of the "Time Machine" last week in a hotel room. After the flick ended, a man was talking about the film, said that the original Time Machine was lost for quite some time, and that someone actually found it again, and restored it! It was found in a thrift store somewhere in California!
While I was watching the film, all I could think of was what a great artcar it would make!
Maybe we'll see it out there after all?

free carpet
there are many carpet stores in reno that we've hit up for free carpet on our way to the playa. they all usually have leftovers or the tear-ups from installations. they're usually amused and happy to let us take some, often helping with the dumpster diving. just remember to duct tape the edges of any shag carpet you get so you don't have to chase little bits of yarn all over your camp.

Emily, that is utterly brilliant! There is a carpet warehouse right near me I will have to visit now....
For those of you trying Craigslist.org and freecycle, I have had great luck there. Some wonderful person on this forum gave me the link to California Materials Exchange too (http://www.ciwmb.ca.gov/calmax/). There are all KINDS of good building supplies on there.
