Teach me about DC motors

Post by unjonharley » Thu Apr 21, 2005 4:29 pm

Can you ran a small DC motor that is rigged to run off a 12v gel battery be hooked up to say a deep cell RV battery? Or am I going to burn it up?

In general, 12 volts is 12 volts. The only exception I can think of would be if the motor was designed to depend on a small battery as a means of current limiting. For example, a small alkaline powered device might burn up if you were to put a lot of load on it while it's hooked to a much larger battery. Also, you wouldn't want to put that RV battery in anything that might tip over.

In most cases high current capacity isn't an issue. What are you trying to do?
