I'm helping out the new WTF 99.9 FM radio station at Apokiliptika this year. If you would like me to do a very short promo on your project to ad to our rotation, please PM me some tag line text (less than 30 seconds) that gets right to the point, or if you prefer, record it yourself in at least 192 quality MP3. Know that we are both at the mercy of the editing knife of "The Count".

Look at the plans they've got for Dicky
Check out the plans on their website. They seem to have all the angles covered. I can't wait to visit with you, Dicky. Any type of beverage you prefer?
Do you have the exact measurements of the parcel slot yet? I'd hate to bring something badass (say, a vintage wine) only to be unable to pass it into the box!

A friendly suggestion

Many people don't like to photographed at the event, and it doesn't sound as if you're giving them an option. Do you want them to just walk by, or as a part of the project are you planning on recording the spectacle of visitors being pissed off that a camera's being shoved in their faces? If you're intent on creating something like the Survivor TV show or a Geraldo news piece, then go right ahead with the visible or hidden cameras, but AFAIK Burning Man has different conventions re: photography.
I was wondering about that, myself. I can easily picture somebody walking past the installation, and being unpleasantly surprised to discover that she is on film.
Dicky - I noticed that one of your walls will specifically be devoted to interaction with the community. May I offer a suggestion as to a way in which you might avoid a few misunderstandings? Shoot from a limited number of angles, maybe from a fixed cam or two, with backdrop curtains (or other visual obstructions) in place behind the Dickie Box, so the only people clearly visible onscreen will be those who chose to be there. Maybe making sure to post clearly visible signs saying that the Dickie Box is being filmed, with arrows pointing toward the cameras so participants will know exactly what they're getting themselves in for, and when and where they'll be getting themselves in for it.
My thought is that since people are interacting with you through only one wall, almost all of the action can probably be captured using only a few angles. This gives you a clearer, less jittery picture, frees up the people who'd be manning the cams for other tasks, and gets you away from the whole, nasty, Voyeur Video - connected issue of nonconsensual video captures. There has been a lot of anger about that subject, and if it were me, I'd want to do what I could to steer well clear of anything that even hinted of somebody being surprised in that way. It's a headache I just wouldn't want to deal with, and, some might argue, an imposition on the unsuspecting bystander. But, of course, I don't know how you feel about that, and it's your call.
With camera angles only being blocked over a limited range of angles, you could still have the great bulk of your 360 degrees unblocked from your own viewpoint, allowing you to see most of the action on the open Playa around you, which I'm guessing you'd like to be able to see. Meaning that in the give and take between your desire to see outside your box and take in what is happening around you, and the desire of others for privacy, you're not doing all of the giving, if that makes any sense. What do you think?
Get off the high horse
Dicky just wants to document his experience in his box, not film the whole goddamn playa. I mean, c'mon, it's an art installation. If someone's going to get bent by seeing a camera pointing at the box, then they should just stay away from it if they don't want to be on camera. I mean, I totally get the idea that cameras are everywhere and that pisses people off (I personally don't bring one because I don't want to get caught up documenting and not participating), but I think this is a whole different issue.
Okay, now I'll get down from my high horse.

In this case it seems like the artist could solve all of the "controversy" by putting up a warning sign saying something like: photography zone: If you pass through here or view this project you could end up being recorded. With such a notice a person could opt out by backing away and taking another route around the project area. That would be a quick way to fix this issue.

Re: Get off the high horse
Wow, that's stupid. A real record setter, to be perfectly blunt about it, and you're getting this from somebody who was able to sit through an entire discussion with Rex without losing his cool. Which is to say, you are actually either far more exasperatingly moronic than the Stop Burning Man people, or at least faking it really well.clairedad wrote:Dicky just wants to document his experience in his box, not film the whole goddamn playa. You had no business being on your high horse in the first place, because you responded without understanding what it is that you were responding to, in the first place. Whether this is due to native stupidity on your part or a desire to be a trolling pain in the backside, I have no interest in finding out. Either way, this lovely habit of running one's mouth off before engaging one's brain is where maybe 70% of all flamewars begin. Good job, slick. People like you have made all too much of the Internet what it is today - a cesspool.
The issue raised by me, and I'm fairly sure the issue raised by Bob as well, was not Dickie being caught on film, but somebody who just happened to be walking past being caught on film, by surprise. Thus the backdrop curtains or other visual obstructions, insuring that the only people who walk into the field of view of the camera will be those who have knowingly chosen to do so.
A perfectly reasonable suggestion which I've now seen two nitwits (you and robotland) respond to with straw man arguments. I most certainly did not suggest, as robotland implies, that the photography crew should attempt to run down everybody who might stumble into a wide range of view and ask for permission to film. Nor did I, as you've just suggested, claim that this project was designed with the intention of "filming the entire playa". Nor did I write anything that anybody could reasonably interpret that way, not even by the broadest stretch of the imagination.
If this is going to be the tone of the rest of this discussion, then to Hell with it. I've done my part, and if somebody else wants to feed or neuter the trolls, my best wishes go with him. As for myself, I now have somebody to keep robotland company in my "ignore" file.

This thread has certainly been a thinker....It'll be interesting to see what solutions the Dicky folks utilize as far as the video/privacy thing is concerned. I can see several ways in which outsider exposure can be dramatically limited, but no way to completely EXCLUDE the possibility of getting caught on tape without the end result being unwatchable.
That interacting with Dicky would REQUIRE that you be okay with being taped DOES limit some peoples' experience. I don't think I'd want to be draped in or curtained off the least small bit, if I were stuck in a box for a week.
Where exactly ARE the boundaries? Is it okay to run an electric current through an art piece and shock people without warning? Or to observe people via concealed cameras as they walk through an installation? Both have been done, in a number of incarnations. At home on my hard drive I have pictures of naked Burning Man participants that have been photographed WITHOUT CONSENT- They happened to be in the middling-to-far background of shots of things or people that I happened to be shooting WITH permission, where possible. (I assume that it's still okay to photograph art, whether or not the artist is present to give their okay.)
I suppose that if I were just DYIN' for a free nudie shot to pass around or post, I could blow one of those pics up....Digitals are all so high-res that the individuals would probably all be recognizable, too. What's important, I believe, is the INTENT. I wouldn't DREAM of doing that. I don't think that's DB's intent either, and it's fascinating to see how much this had become about what's OUTSIDE of the box as opposed to INSIDE.
Assuming that the plan to document the entire week of Dicky Box is still a go, I look forward to watching. Maybe I'll even show up in the footage. Either way, it's not a big deal to me. We'll see how big a deal it is to everyone else in about three months.

Ummm, yeah, seriously. If you're out in public at Burning Man, you will be photographed. Count on it. If you can't bear having your picture on dozens of web pages scattered around the internet, then maybe Burning Man is not the event for you to be attending.robotland wrote:Observer, you'd better look out for these guys this year:

Hey I’m planning on having a lunchtime weenie roast at the Dicky box on Wed or Thurs. Perhaps I should call it a dickey roast. Hey Dicky, is your slot large enough to slide a hot dog through? (no pun intended) I will be gifting as many hot dogs as I can but feel free to bring your own grillables.
