AAA ???

Post by EvilDustBooger » Fri May 06, 2005 6:36 am

Question.
Maybe someone has experience with this. In the event I have car trouble in the BRD; will AAA come all the way out and haul my sorry ass back to civilization? I realize I`d have to make it to an area with phone service to call them. But have they ever saved anyone way out there? And if not, does anyone know about a reliable wrecker service / auto shop in the area? ..... I suppose I could try the DPW,.. but last year,. they threatened to burn down my neighbor`s camp if he didn`t send out all of his beer, drugs, and women..so I`m thinking they wouldn`t be much help....besides...I love my beer, drugs and women, so...It would be nice to know ahead of time.......gulp....just in case..
Thanks for any input.

Good question. I'd like to get some value out of AAA besides a map or two.

Depending on your membership level you should be able to either get towed to the nearest station or to wherever you need to go.....

i've only had to use it once, but i was travelling to my college for a reunion weekend, and broke down 30 minutes away. they towed me to the town my college is in. i don't know what kind of membership i have, my dad has an account and i'm on his, so i don't know anything except that they saved my ass that day.

i'd call the local AAA office and ask them.

We had to pay $200 for a tow to reno in 2002. I didn't arrange it, so I don't remember all the details.

My AAA has a 200mile tow limit. It"s 125 to Reno. Thet have towed me 80 miles. Check your AAA it might pay and then charge you for extra miles.

Might they have a stipulation for not going "off road" which the playa may be considered?

Based on my many many experiences with AAA (over 90% of which have been good) here's my $0.02:

Definitely call and ask. See if they can give you the # for the Reno office. I have a "Plus" membership which gets me either 200 miles or unlimited towing. I can't remember.

Here's what happens. You call and tell them the problem, they pick the service station within their network most able to suit your needs. If it's something special or specific like being stuck in a ditch it can take them a while to get someone to you. I'd imagine that they may be able to send someone "offroad" but it might be quite a wait. If it's something like locking your keys in your car, they may very well tell you it's too out-of-the-way, fix it yourself.

The more advance knowledge you get directly from the source on this, the better! Even if someone got a tow 2 years ago, that garage may be out of business!! Please do write back with what you find out, though. This could be an ass-saving thread for many people.

Is Black Rock City Real ? ? ?

Post by EvilDustBooger » Fri May 06, 2005 11:31 am

Yeah, I got AAAplus, They said they would tow me up to 100 miles free.

They said 100 miles is the maximum plan that they offer. AAA says it will
help me ANYWHERE I TRAVEL in the USA....ANY CITY...24/7 . . . Do they recognize BRC as a city?... The saleslady assured me that all was fine, not to worry.....
.....I hope I don`t have to test that theory.

I broke down in Primm, NV while driving my car from SF a few years ago. The tow truck came from Las Vegas and then p/u'd my car and then took us to Las Vegas since Primm had no repair stations (which is weird and maybe someone should build one since it's like a pre-Las Vegas'y little town with Buffalo Bill's!)
I paid the extra $$ when I signed up with AAA because the cheaper memebership gets you about 50 miles of towing. It paid for itself in that instance.

Montana, why do you always have to be so naughty?
And why do I really like that?

i wonder if AAA will double our mileage with 2 memberships in the car? probably not, but it wouldn't hurt to ask i guess!

There was a guy in 04 that gifted a pop a lock service for the playa. Gotta figure with that many folks some one will lock there keys in.
I forget what his name is. Anyway I wish to thank him for the camp across the way form me. It only took five min. Nice gift.

I guess I`ll trust AAA to be there for me.....hopefully won`t need them.
That`s what AAA is "banking" on I`m sure !
Thanks for the input.......you know,...
There have been a dozen responses to my post, lots of good responses,....and not one response by
anyone in the DPW denying or justifying the extremely severe treatment they dished out at 4:15 & Sedna last summer.......tee hee

I do know one thing about AAA......They will NOT tow a car you have just purchased that is not running. I suppose they might if you were a really good actor. That is totally not the word I'm looking for but all I can think of right now.

I broke down on 447 in 2002 and called AAA on a Washoe County Sheriff's sattelite phone, I waited 8 hours and didn't see anyone. I was finally rescued by a fellow burner with some mechanical skills & tools. So don't count on them during that last stretch.
