Tickets are on sale ... www.burningmanportlandburners.com ... new artists/theme camps are highlighted on the website every day ... the flyer is beautiful and being scattered around the community ... the Southern Oregon & Seattle Regionals are joining us with their camps.

Sounds like a family reunion you don't want to miss? It won't be the same without you!

This will be mid-Oregon coast so even those in Northern California should consider coming up for this.

Jason

PS It is 1derland although 1derful has a nice ring to it.

that URL should be www.portlandburners.com or www.burningmanportland.com - not all together like that.

Soak is going to be amazing.

Here is my review of the weekend. Mind you it is not as broad a view of the weekend as other reviews might be. I was running a sound stage most of the weekend.

Jason

This has been a weekend for the books. You know it is a party when you wake up and a drag queen is passed out in a chair next to the speakers.

Soak was held on the Central coast of Oregon near Waldport OR. The land is 80 acres of beautiful landscape containing a lake, sweat lodge, playground, orchard, and many other attributes. I was the main organizer of 1derland. 1derland is based on the tales of Lewis Carrol and is a loose collective of friends from the Portland area containing burners and non-burners alike. My wife and I managed to arrive on the property near 5pm and begin the setup. After raising a large carport structure and getting sound up and running it was near 8p. For lights we went simple. We used strands of Christmas lights, an oil projector, and a few other light gadgets. Off of the carport we put to 8 foot sections of 2x4 into the ground and attached eye bolts at the top. We then strung rope and created a small dance floor encircled by Christmas lights. We proceeded to plant out giant mushrooms (Amazing decoration of umbrellas). We put giant flowers around and also smaller ones. At this point it was near 10p and we had a large portion of our camp arrive. I think at this point the count I had was near 30 people. Almost immediately upon the setup of sound we had peoples attention. The first night was a busy night for me of watching the sound and making sure no one blew up the speakers. We had several good djs playing everything from deep house on through to hard-core. Much drinking ensued. I managed a trial run of some of the tunes that I have setup for Burning Man and with great success. We had a boat tip over near our dancefloor but no one was injured. The boat several times nearly ran over the turntables and sound. I managed to climb into bed about 7am after a few last minute chats and some quick hugs. I slept for a few hours and was awoken by a bullhorn outside my tent determining that I must rise. A few middle fingers and cuss words ensued and I was back to sleep. After a few hours and a little drinking the morning lead to afternoon. I pulled out the records and dropped into a 4 hour set. Mixing tracks and feeling the afternoon was one of my highlights. Our camp was bustling with activity and many friendly faces were around. At this point I was scheduled to greet so I pulled on my best wig and vinyl skirt and made my way to the greeters station. Most everyone had arrived already so it was very quiet at the greeters station so we did what any bored person might do. We poured gasoline in the burn barrel and made attempts at removing our body hair. Upon returning to camp everyone was costumed who came prepared. The weather was cold so the more revealing outfits were left to be covered. This was sad as it was drag night in our camp and we had a school girl and several other woah-mans who decided to scare the weekend warrior types. We also were graced by the presence of the mad hatter and two pirates who managed to overtake the boat mentioned earlier. As the night started to darken the skies were taken over by a flamethrower and a procession of drummers leading the masses to the burn. The burn was wonderful and with the aid of the flamethrower fireworks launched into the crowd and the man burned. Almost immediately as the man fell the rain began. Some people braver than others dance around the fire. Myself and family made our way back to camp. I setup the djs and got them running. My wife then put our son in bed and the tequila flowed. As soon as our burn barrel was lit the crowd was drawn to the fire. We had community umbrellas which allowed many people to dance and still stay dry. At one point my wife comes up to me and lets me know that our tent is leaking. The rain fly had plenty of condensation and had been dripping onto our beddings respectively on each side of the bed where we would sleep. The night was cold as all hell and the rain fell hard. Many people were flooded out of their tents and were seeking refuge. By morning my clothes were all soaked except for a clean pair of underwear, a jacket and a pair of socks I had forgotten in the trunk of the car. Luckily a friend let me borrow some firefighters pants and they became my comfort for a rough day ahead. This was the day to tear down and begin home. The rain seemed never-ending. Slowly but surely items got packed. As people began to leave the problem presented itself. The ground was slick and many cars were not equipped for escape. Many cars had to be pushed up the slightest of hills and heavier vehicles were near stuck. One soul tow driver was in the area and began to rescue people along with a few people who owned tow ropes. My one car at the bottom of the hill was nearly stuck but I managed to get it near safety. My other car was barely safe. We still had to tow both cars over 50 yards to a safe passageway to the main road. In so many ways this day was the worst but it was the best. Everyone was getting dirty and soaked but the still helped each other and dug in and got it done. There was so much a sense of community. No one person was left behind to fend for themselves. The descent down the mountain was quiet and rainy. Nearly 3 hours of driving and we arrived home by 8p. It was a hell of a weekend not soon to be forgotten.
