Playa Cheese
Okay, some of us managed to keep cheese on playa. What works? Hard? Soft? Fridge? Cooler? Cow and churn?
And I take it under the circumstances the right wine is "whatever you can find."

Goat cheese by a landslide!!!!! WooHoo!!!! *dropping balloons*
I brought a block of CoJack-who-loves-ya-baby cheese for the Hushville cocktail party last year....Airtight wrapping left nowhere for condensation to gather, and it kept perfectly all week! This year I plan to experiment with soft cheeses and those camp-store "toothpaste tube" dispensers. Anything to pretend I'm eating Astronaut Food!
"Do you, in fact, have ANY cheese here?"
"Why,YES, this is a CHEESE SHOP!"

I can't speak for the Playa (until later in the fall) but as long as it's ziplocked and kept in a "fridge cooler" (to keep the water off, we had the best luck with Cheddar, Meunster, Camembert, and Swiss. Feta kept OK but got crumbly. Meunster reacted the same as Cheddar. The Bleu got funky, tho, which was a heartbreak - one of the things I'm playing with for this year, along with Mozarella balls (for Caprezi, once I can figure out the Tomato end!!) which should work well.
And I can't click Camembert.

I was considering a "Cheap Wine and Cheezewiz" Social. I figure that there are several places to get cheap wine by the case in Reno, combine this with a case or two of CHeezewiz, in various flavors, and it is the perfect playa treat.. hehe.. thoughts on this? You could bring Feta if you so desire.. or crackers...

When I was in Guam, Spam was it's own food group...
they love it there. I had one of the higher ups tell me I had been "On island" too long because I was eating tortilla shells with microwave heated Spam on it!
YUM!!
I used to have a sticker on my truck that read "Got Spam?" but it went with the truck and was removed. : (

Spam is a huge favorite in Hawaii as well. Very popular in all kinds of dishes.Martiansky wrote:When I was in Guam, Spam was it's own food group...

All over Polynesia. A high status food and the largest domesticated animal of hte cultures. I once read something else by a woman from Hawai'i who emphasised the "cannedness" of spam. When she was growing up, fresh food didn't arrive regularly, so spam was extra handy. Too bad we can't dig a pit for a sucking pig luau style. ON the other hand there are pates that come in cans and tubes, maybe that's abetter idea than cheese. Of course that way you illimniate the lacto-ovos as well as the vegans.sputnik wrote:Spam is a huge favorite in Hawaii as well. Wrongness Factor: 9.4Hormel Potted Meat Product WITH PINEAPPLE
Sorry but the pineapple doesn't help make that more appealing. Why on earth would anyone want to consume something called "potted meat product"? At least SPAM stands for spiced ham. I know what that is. But wtf is "potted meat product"?

I am SO in for a fondue night. We've got 3 pots! The hard cheeses would survive just fine until melting, I'm sure. Could put Kirsch and pots in the camper right now. Butter can be frozen until use. Will need a couple of hardcore graters (both the devices and those using them!) and voila!Martiansky wrote:I think fondue is back in style...or it was last year.
I wonder if we still have that fondue pot around here?
Now my brain juices are flowing.... Chocolate fondue? Butter's already on the list, and cheapo chocolate bars could be picked up in Reno. Who could bring what for dipping?
Seems like we've got a potential party in the making here! Woot!!!

I love Brie - nothing beats some warm brie on a cracker with a glass of red wine in my opinion. add a little toasted garlic (love it that's what breath assure is for!) Its kept well for me simply wrapped in saran and then in a plastic bag on the ice in the cooler.
Spam Musabi! I love Hawaii and it's affection for Spam. On the islands there is a "King and Queen of Spam" contest were you can win a can of spam for the everyday of the year!

Smoked cheeses tend to stay well. I usually take a block of smoked gouda with me on backpacking trips, and it holds up amazingly well and is such a treat. However, I don't do this in a 100+ degree sun-blasted desert. I keep it wrapped in saran wrap, in a ziplock, at the top of the ice chest for the playa.
