Welcom All
Howdy folks
I haven't checked in for quite some time. Thought I'd opine that after 4 consecutives burns, in all the important ways, I still consider myself a virgin. I may come this year, though now I have two baby boys and a mommy to provide for, so it could be a year off.

Hello and welcome to the board Lana. Within these threads and the Firsttimers Manual you should find all the information you need to have a completely Fab time, love. Can't wait to see you on the playa. If you get a chance pop over to the year-round thread and join the chatter in the bar. Glad you made it welcome home.

Hi there, I'm Margot and last year was my first time burning, although I had yearned to go for years before that. I will be there this year camping with the Phoenix Projekt fire spinners. (Go figure, I've never spun fire... guess it's time to learn!) Looking forward to meeting TONS of crazy new friends this year!

pixie, we will be flying to Vancouver and driving down this year (at a very leisurely speed - last year we flew to LA and drove north via Death Valley, Yosemite, etc). What I have read about Vancouver and the cities on the route has made me really look forward to it! Nice to meet you in the electronic version & hope to see you on the playa. :)

Hi everyone!
I'm Pedro, from Lisbon, Portugal, 21, student, in love with life. More on myself later, this time why am i here?
I just found about the BM project today although i spent a year in the US in 2001/2002, how can that possibly be?!
For the last year or so i'v been subconsciously fighting with the idea that i might very well be insane... as a matter of fact some of the things that crossed my mind doing sounded ridiculous enough for everyone else to start sounding so even to me!
I just realised from you i have a whole lot of insanity yet to learn!
Count me in as soon as i can afford it (not this year probably, but 2006 for sure).
PS: has anybody heard of a BM related event in Europe? Anyone interested in starting one?;)

Hi, I'm Berk. I live in the mtns of N. Calif, in an off-the-grid alternative life, and love gatherings of alternative culture! I've always wanted to go to burning man - always knew I'd LOVE it, but it was the same exact time as the Hog Farm Pig-Nic, so since that was in my home area, I went there 'til it's untimely end.
The '04 burn was my first, tho, I know other burners from near & far. I always wanted to participate, so I flew about 50 folks around the area for another perspective from above. I was surprised to hear that some thought it was the *highlight* of their burning man experience. It was fun to be able to do that for people. My favorite trip there was when several of us went to a hot springs just over the Oregon border, and had a great soak. The two gals with me, Shannon, and Jill, went topless at the local gas station in Winnemucca, and got us the standing discount for topless women of 5% off. The whole community of BRC is a great inspiration. I'm really looking forward to this year. See you there!
Happy Landings, Berk

Hi everyone I'm AZ and I'm going to have some fun with all of you at BM.
Glad you're on board for the best place to be if you're not dead yet.

Come on Burk, if that was true then we wouldn't fuck up laws prohibiting it, right. So that must be a sarcastic statement.

Hello and good evening, my name is Elemental666. I'm turning 30 this year and celebrating by liberation from the debt demon by returning to a more primitive lifestyle. Part of this lifestyle shift includes experiencing people on a more personal level, welcoming a greater artistic influence to my daily routine and focusing more on favor for favor interaction. All that without even having attended BM. This will be my first year, though I have made plans several years before. Unfortunately this is the year I am following through due to the passing of my best friend and companion of 20 years, Nasu Dyami. I'm bringing him and a temple dedicated to him with me.
I'm looking forward to meeting a fist full of new and exciting people as well as experiencing the life fandango on the open playa.

Hello, this is Cavale. <wave> I'm a BM "virgin" planning on going for the first time year with my boyfriend (also a virgin). I am 18 and he is 19, so I'm kind of nervous and wondering how many people there will be around our age? (18-25) Also we'd really like to be involved in some kind of theme camp so if anyone wants to extend an invitations (and kind of be a de facto guide for us as we start out) that'd be awesome. The boyfriend LOVES goa trance (Infected Mushroom, Shpongle, Hallucinogen, Juno Reactor). We've both got a weird off-kilter sense of humor, and are extremely left-leaning in our political stances. We both like hallucinogenics. So anyone who shares any of these things in common with us, send me an e-mail and maybe we can meet up at BM.

Cavale (and other welcome new folks) --
The Burning Man site has a lot of info. According to the 2003 census, about 13% were 18-25, 22% were 26-30, 37% were 31-40, 17% were 41-50. In other words, every age range is in the minority, and it really does not matter. Also, 57% were male and 42% were female, 1% were other.

well, this is a little off topic but i can't resist leaving Cavale (and boyfriend) a challenge to join the best psytrance festival this year in Elvas, Portugal. Infected Mushroom, Hallucinogen, Talamasca, Astrix, GMX, etc... check line-up and details at:The boyfriend LOVES goa trance (Infected Mushroom, Shpongle, Hallucinogen, Juno Reactor). Welcome Chume. The answer to this question largely depends on you and the theme camp. If you join a theme camp you will likely be required to put in some hours working on the camp before leaving for the desert and also while you are there. In exchange you may find that they have a meal sharing program, cleanup sharing, etc (this is the way Ubercarney worked for me last year and the way LaMancha will work this year). Some theme camps do not work this way, and all that is provided is a common area to camp in and perhaps a common shared space for meals and chill time.Chume wrote:Should I join a theme camp in advance? or can I just arrive and settle wherever I want?
You can certainly just arrive and pick out any open spot to camp on. The only reserved spaces are those set aside for theme camps. Obviously the earlier you arrive, the better the pickings are for camp space. However, there is always abundant space available if you're willing to camp on the edges.
Have fun.
It's going to be alright.

Definately find someone to join. It is far better to be a participant than a tourist. Also, the desert is an extremely harsh environment; a newbie would be far better off in the company of experienced burners who are likely to have knowledge and supplies you'll find you need.Chume wrote:Hello, I just heard about burning man and am definitely going. I read the web site and it's amazing. I just have a question, Should I join a theme camp in advance? or can I just arrive and settle wherever I want?
In another forum, someone suggested joining lamplighters, and that sounds like an excellent idea to me.

Just Checking In
2005 will be my first visit to BRC! My name is rain and I'm coming from Saint Louis. I'm pretty sure I'm going to fly into Reno and I'm wondering what my options for getting to the Playa from the airport might be? Is there a thread somewhere on these boards that I am just missing?

Re: Just Checking In
There's no mass transportation from Reno to the desert... search the ePlaya for the discussion groups on finding rides (i.e. from fellow Burners) from the airport. Helo Rain. There are lots of options for getting from Reno to BRC. Which one you choose will depend on your needs. Here is a pointer to a rideshare system linked off the main BM site:
http://www.burningman.com/calendar/year ... hp?id=1370
You can also rent a vehicle in Reno and drive out:
http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewtopic. ... =rent+reno
I've even heard rumor of someone getting in a taxi and riding out (awfully expensive I would think). An extended size minivan cost me $500 for just over a week last year. Not too bad when split among multiple people, but still a lot.

I know there is no mass transport from reno to the playa. I know there is somewhere on these boards to help look for a ride.
What I don't know is *where* on these boards.
I'm new to message boards, generally use elists or instant messaging with my emails.
I can't seem to find the rideshare thread...

Thanks for the links Sputnik! Much appreciated. I'm going to get together with more Saint Louis folks and see what's what with them before I post my need. I'm thinking I'm going to have to rent a vehicle just to bring everything anyway, but it'd sure be nice if I could avoid that. Still haven't figured out how to bring 15 gallons of water. I can bring only two large packs but still two coolers for food and beverages... Fortunately I do have a lot of friends here that have been going for years so hopefully they will soon step up and help me figure it all out. So far they are great with telling me what to bring, just not how to get it there. I can't drive, have to fly due to time constraints... I know it'll all work out as it should. Thanks again!
