Cites? OK, Joel. (hint, do a Yahoo news search for "Maciel")
The story was on the AP wire (and others) as of 23 May 2005 regarding allegations that the founder of the Legionaries of Christ, Fr Marcial Maciel, abused young seminarians. Here's one reference from the International Herald Tribune:
http://www.iht.com/articles/2005/05/22/news/vat.php
Here's a link to the statement by Congregation of the Legionaries of Christ:
http://www.legionaryfacts.org/newsrelease1.html
Just to be somewhat fair, the problem is not restricted to Catholicism:
http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/05/22/louis ... index.html
I think that the current outrage is based on how the CC can pontificate [!] about morality for the laity and others, but plays CYA when it comes to the hierarchy. Here's a link showing B16's hand in damage control:
http://www.beliefnet.com/story/97/story_9727_1.html
B16 also played a role in the US election when he directed Catholic bishops to deny communion to abortion rights advocates. Here's a cite based on a Cox News Serice report:
http://www.dailyadvance.com/news/conten ... RRY21.html
And the purges go on. Jesuit Fr. Thomas J. Rees was removed as the editor of America magazine under pressure from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith [during Ratzinger's tenure]. Ref:

That's enough pope news for this evening.

I think they should dig the old pope back up for old times sake. You know, just as a gag. Have someone scheduled for an audiance escorted to a room with the old pope in a chair. Maybe dress him in a black robe and have him holding a scythe or something.
Imagine the leader of some country running out of there and all the cardinals and the new pope holding their sides from laughing so hard.

Pope hunting for gays
Okay, so B16 is extending his previous record of gay bashing. The most recent move is a Vatican document (approved by B16) that, in essence, calls gays sick and ineligible for the priesthood. Of course, women are also barred, although not for being "objectively disordered."
For some background, see

The first priest has already resigned in reaction:

In another conservative move by B16, Franciscans are likely to find it more difficult to practice activism.

I read about that. What I don't get is they use the rationale of sexual activity among the priesthood for the exclusion.
Bottom Line: Roman Catholic priests aren't supposed to have sex in the first place, doesn't matter whether they're gay, straight, bi or whatever! It's immaterial whether women, men, children, cotton bales, BMW exhaust pipes or Maltese eels ding his doorbell.

Um... Preists in the RCC take a vow of celibacy ANYWAY. What I don't get is why t's such a big deal if someone was homosexual, heterosexual, asexual, or even vegisexual - after they receive Holy Orders (the ordination gig) they aren't supposed to have any sort of sexual relations with nobody nohow anyway.
Or is it... hmmm... Ewww, don't want them dirty homos, everyone knows they're child molesters and perverts and freaks, they even think about >gasp< SEX. Oh no!!! ext thing you know, they'll be putting their wee-wees in places. You KNOW they can't control their sexual urges like good, upstanding hetero men can... And I'll know then that no preist of mine will look at me and be aroused, no sirree, and I won't have to wonder if they are or are not... Yep, those on my watch will be HETERO priests only...
Yeesh.
The everlasting question is this, tho...
IF the Church is so worried about the whole male-on-male thing, then WHY do they endorse it so heartily by prohibiting females from being ordained? I mean, what... women aren't GOOD enough? Holy enough? Have women living in those rectories, we'll see how much "funny stuff" goes on...
OK, go back to the original church - allow Married preists, ordain women, break open the cast iron shell of hidden stuff. Can they do that? Dare the church do that?
And while we're at it - get back to the "love one another" thing, and away from the condemnation, suspicion, and hate.
Would they dare???

banning gays is their way of re-focusing attention away from the worse part of the abuse scandal in the church.....the hierarchys failure to hand child-abusing priests over to the police.
