The day's almost here. I've been fucking waiting for this since Thanksgiving. Four days and counting!! =D
I'm currently gathering a couple friends to go see it as a group up in Portland. I'll probably come right back down to Eugene and see it with friends there, I'm that psyched.
From what I hear, it got two thumbs up. No surprises there. If anyone can do a decent remake of Willy Wonka, it's Tim Burton.
Not sure which PDX theatre we'll go see it in, I'm just going to see what my friends say. They know the neighbourhood better than I do. I'm just planning to head out from here around 2ish. And damn, am I psyched to have a plum-coloured tail coat like Mr. Wonka!

The Tech is running the IMAX print in their theatre; I am SO there.

Anything purple is mine. Anything else can be dyed or painted.

Oh, Ghod, what a weekend!
The movie was great. Didn't fall short of my expectations in the least, and the Oompa Loompas kicked ass! I'm sure the Cacophonists in the audience will get a chuckle out of the burning dolls, too
I'm currently waiting for my local Barnes & Noble to get the soundtrack in, they have it on order. Apparently five other people came in inquiring, in one day!! Seriously, I think the music was the best part of the film — though it wasn't a landslide victory, the acting was top-notch, especially Depp. And only Christopher Lee could say "Do you have an appointment?" and make it sound menacing
I went to Portland to see it with some friends and friends of theirs. One of our group had to bail because the 9 o'clock show was sold out and he had to be home in time to help take care of his 4-day-old baby. We came out of the theatre singing and dancing the Dolls Welcome song and some of the other people laughed and sang along. You know it's a good movie when the audience comes out singing and dancing!
I'm not much of a merch junkie, but I want Wonka's cane. I can't find it online, but I think what I'll do is go see the film a couple more times, look hard at it, and see if I can build it myself. It looks pretty simple, just a plastic tube filled with candy similar to SweeTarts and topped with a black-and-white swirl knob (how very Burtonian).
Who caught the Smashing Pumpkins joke? Augustus Gloop was awesome, that kid was bigger than almost everyone and they did his makeup to make him look like a zombie. The scene of him in the Chocolate Room reminded me of Godzilla stomping through Tokyo. But far and away, Deep Roy's Oompa Loompas kicked ass. Loved all the send-ups during their scenes. He and Burton just went OFF and camped it up to a faretheewell. Let's just say that I haven't laughed this much in a movie since I saw The Emperor's New Groove/
Yeah, go see it! There's enough political incorrectness and wackiness to make anyone happy. Sure, everyone and their mother's sister's cousin-in-law went, but go see it. It's a fun movie and the crowds are psyched.

I've seen the cane (Limited! Numbered! Edition!) as prizes in a couple sweepstakes thingies, but nothing I'd sign up for. A homemade one would be better anyway. I'd use an old slag glass gearshift knob for the top, not perfect spirals, but unique swirls. They're all over ebay, look for "(swirl, slag, marble) knob" and then ingore all the drawer pulls and doorknobs.

Actually a drawer pull would probably be just what the doctor ordered, because I'd want to take it off to get at the candy (Oooh! Reality Camp gifting!
). A cork screwed on the drawer pull and hidden by the candy would be perfect.
Edit:
(PING!)
Waitaminnit!!! We got a glass school in town and there are four glass vendors at Saturday Market!!

When I went to my local Regal cinema a couple nights ago, one of the ticket takers costumed as Willy Wonka. Not perfect, but the cane, the top hat, the tail coat, the black pants — and what an image
