another BM virgin
another BM virgin
Hi I'm kyrie dragonfly and i'm super stoked to be able to go this year...
I know lots of burners and although at present haven't got a ride or a camp or any clue of what i'll do, i think that this event will be transformative and epic!!!!
And i'll make new friends!
See ya there...
p.s. i tried to get myself an avatar, but my pictures are too big or whatever, so until i figure it out, it will be blank...

Re: another BM virgin
Hi; welcome aboard.
If you know lots of burners, your very best bet is to go with them. I can't imagine going without camping with friends and finding ways to participate. It's far better (IMHO) to be a participant than a tourist.
So find out which of your friends are going to be in camps and see if there's room for you in their camp.

You'll also want to seriously consider who you will be most compatible with for the drive and the event.falk wrote:Hi; welcome aboard.

If you can't find any friends to go with, do what some others are doing and post here (on the Share board).
The key to success on this is to plan and get committments EARLY.
It's what you make it.
prepare early
DallasPlaya is right. Prepare early. Although I am a virgin BM, I found that it has taken me months in the planning. I've had some great help from some folks that will be the 4th time. There is some valuable information in the First-Timers Guide, but it just gets the juices flowing for how to prepare. The number one rule in my book is not to be a freeloader and bring all that I will need. The number two rule is not to be a nuisance in any way for fellow burners. My third rule is not to leave a trace that I've been there. Of course the golden rule is to have a blast and I know I will. Have a great time.

Sometimes purposeful, well-done nuisancery can be funny.Scubapro wrote: The number two rule is not to be a nuisance in any way for fellow burners.
Not everyone shares my opinion.

So true.Dr. Pyro wrote:If I may offer one piece of sagely advice, advice that I wish someone had inparted upon me before I got to Black Rock City for my first visit:
There is only one commodity with any real value at Burning Man: Time. Use it wisely.
And whoever said "don't be a nuisance" was right. Nothing worse than someone who doesn't want to be there. And if you decide that you don't want to be there, leave your camp and go find a reason to be there because I truly feel that there's something for everyone there.
It's what you make it.
Nuisance at BM
I have every intention of having fun at BM. Just not at others' expense. And yes I will keep a very open mind to people expressing themselves. I'm not planning to be a stick in the mud either. Just considerate.
After reading all I can about BM, I get the feel for the spirit and will fully immerse myself into the culture. I get more excited each day. It will be my sincere hope that I will come away from BM with a new and more enlightened view of humanity. My God, just think of what my view of the world will be when I come away from BM. My mentor, a 4th time burner has been telling me I will be changed in the way I look at life, people and willl come away either stronger in my relationship with my spouse or have some real problems that has perculated to the surface. Either way, I know I will be a better person because of my experience. BM is a lot more than just fire, nudity, craziness, etc. Only those who have experienced BM if immerseed in its spirt can begin to understand the depths. I plan and hope I will be one at the end of the event. I do understand that each one of us will come away with something different yet unique and wonderful in its own way.
I also respect those opinions who are just hearing blah, blah, blah. Yet, you will still contribute to the total experience.

Another Camping trip
blyslv,
That was funny. And I can see BM in many ways is just that. I know it can be that for some and possibly for me. But, I will try to make it much more. I've spent a lot of time out in the desert (i.e. motorcycles and dunebuggies, rock hounding, etc.), so camping isn't very new to me. My purpose this time is so very different than in the past, I hope to glean some further understanding of life. I suppose you can say this will be more of a spiritual trip for me.
