Absolutely local folk art. Milagros are small. And you can pick them from your region and tell me (at least) about their cultural functions. I love the black pottery of Colima (although that may not be a good thing to bring because of breakage). ARe Molas Mexican or futher south? Day of the Dead figures. Tin art. Wool blankets. Okay, unrealistic. But Woven scarves. Just go to your Zocolo and pretend you're a slightly informed tourist. I have a weakness for the paper mache fruit but again that's bulky. Basically we're talking about a culture rich in decorative crafts. There must be something you could buy 50 or 100 of. If you know any local craft persons who make something small enough, they might be able to use the income too.[/code]

A champurrado mixer.
It's this wooden thingie about 12" long, with a loose-jointed ball on the end, carved in a star pattern in cross-section. They use them to make champurrado, which is a chilled cocoa drink.
It's illegal to bring them into the States, believe it or not, but I'd LOVE a cacao tree pod, complete with the beans intact. I'd love to taste cacao pulp someday, understand it's citrusy and refreshing. The Mayas would pick the pods, toss the beans and suck on the pulp of the pods. Imagine, a lemonade-type drink using cacao pulp!

4 small bottles of Dos Gusanos, (miss that stuff)
some vanilla, a gift of some cash to the elder women that hang behind the gates of the touristo traps on the way to Coba, and room #12 at the Blue Parrot Inn in Playa Del Carmen for a week. (oh, and for you to remove the GAP store that apparently has been installed on the main street there as well...they USED to have a no franchise law...)
gracias,

Turns out that the op is underage, so maybe we could find something that she actually could bring in the country.
Even if she were 21, she couldn't bring in that much booze, I'm sure.
