freight containers

Post by undawawa » Sun Jun 26, 2005 12:27 pm

I have noticed freight truck delivery used by the larger camps. We're stepping it up drastically this year ( a 60'd steel conduit dome with 5 sails for covering weighs almost 1&1/2 tons!). Can anyone recommend a burn friendly shipping company? There are many companies out there, however my inititial inquiries have yielded high quotes or unwillingness. I'm sure it's easier from the bay area, but our location is in Seattle. Any insight from someone handling this aspect for a previous camp or employed in the shipping industry would be greatly appreciated.

I read occasionally in prior years that people in NYC rented such trucks themselves and had a couple of guys drive them out. Takes longer than a car, I'm sure, but it may be cheaper than renting the delivery and pick up with a driver.

Maybe somebody knows who they were? Where they got their truck? I know it's not your exact question, but it may be a better alternative. Or maybe not.

I did a bunch of research on shipping from nyc to reno about a month ago. The best quote I found was with a freight consolidator.

freightcenter.com 1.800.719.7608 Scott (ext 1002) was the guy I spoke with.

He quoted me 1000lbs, 10x12x5 volume. $1080.00 2700 miles. Volume hardly affects price, you get a 10-15% leeway on weight. Price fluctuates based on gas prices, so it may have gone up slightly in the last few weeks.

To get these prices though, you must pack everything yourself, and (here is the big one), have someone to receive it. I've made a deal with a self storage place to have him recieve the stuff on my behalf. This took some convincing though.

I posted a thread earlier asking if anyone in nyc wanted to consolidate a load, but got no responce. I've since scalled down my camp and not sure if I need shipping.
