just finished "aquariums of pyongyang" by kang, chul-hwan, a true story about the author's 10 years in a north korean gulag (along with his entire family) disturbing to say the least (for some unknown reason i'm fascinated with anything to do with brutal regimes, holocausts, and dictators)
right now... the motorcycle diaries by che quevara, loved the movie, love the book more.
vanity fair magazine. they have some good articles, just finished one about the way media is become marketing.
the bitch in the house, it's 26 or so articles by various women. beh.. it's hit and miss but still interesting.

If a kid asks where rain comes from, I think a cute thing to tell him is "God is crying." And if he asks why God is crying, another cute thing to tell him is "Probably because of something you did."

Just finished a re-acquainting of myself with 1984, digested what it means to me now at 43 as opposed to what I thought of it at age 16 when I first cracked it, ran it through the filter of the cinematic version of it, and stuck it back on the shelf.
I took down Shardik by Richard Adams next and I'm about 200 pages into it. Brilliant book. I'm wondering why the studio that put out the animated Watership Down and The Plague Dogs don't do this as well? It's clearly the best of the three. Or, even, why they bothered with the latter? Should have skipped Plague Dogs entirely and gone from rabbits to a bear.

YAY! I got Hat Full of Sky in the mail! YAY MORE DISCWORLD!
Rats, after only 2 days, I'm almost done.
YAY! I have The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents!
It's the Pied Piper story with a twist.
That should keep me busy until the end of the week.

Finished Shardik. Now I know why they didn't go from bunnies to a bear, this would never make it as an animated film anywhere but Japan! No, if someone (Ridley Scott comes to mind) made "Shardik" that sucker'd be rated R. Unquestionably. The way the bear gets fucked up throughout the course of the story alone points to it.
I caught the subtext fairly early. I thought, "This could be pointed at almost any organized religion on the face of the earth and it'd be a fitting allegory." Religion can be twisted and skewed to excuse the excesses of its zealots: that's the moral I got from the read.
I'd love to do a Shardik stick horse (early inspiration: do the flames in figured maple) but it's not in the public domain yet and I couldn't sell it, and that's too much work and expense to just do it for my own edification.

Just finished Andromeda Strain and watching the movie simultaneously. I'd read a chunk of the book, then watch the movie up to the point where I hadn't read it yet, repeat. It was a great afternoon.
Just saw 13th Warrior, so now I MUST stop what I'm doing and read Eaters of the Dead.
Ok, after I finish Prey.
(What can I say, I've gone from one addiction -- Discworld -- to another -- Crichton.)

The first book to get me antsy about something and make my toes tingle in a looooong time... Just got it from "bigtallscarywoman dot com". (You know the one...)
The Man Burns Tonight by Donn Cortez.
As a murder mystery it's not bad, but the images... the sounds... Hell, I can damn near smell the Playa dust just by reading it. (Wait, maybe that's my body pillow... nope... it's the book...)

Heli, I thought you would be reading stuff on the Geneva convention and prisoner's rights. That way when Camp Apokiliptika is overrun by allied forces and you're taken prisoner you'll know your rights. Or at least the ones we might chose to give you. (evil grin)

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norell by Susanna Clark
and
A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking.
I was following him up until we got to the point where there was no more big bang, time became imaginary, and the universe was no longer infinite but still had no boundaries or edges.

The last Hawking sighting I have word of is his wheel chair going "error...error..." over and over again. Maybe that's why.Driveway wrote:Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norell by Susanna Clark
