Hello there, Norway calling.

I Have a dream of buying an enclosed cargo trailer for transport and storage of burner stuff.

Since I'm from Norway I have to buy the same basic stuff every year that me and my Norwegian burners needs for the playa.
This because it's limited how much we can drag with us on the airplane going back to Norway.
So the idea is to store everything we only use on the playa in the cargo trailer till next time we come back to Burning Man.
This will save us time and money, having the basic stuff ready in the trailer when we arrive USA.

THE PROBLEM IS: We need to have a place to park the cargo trailer in the San Francisco - Reno earea for one year every time the festival is over since we live in Norway.

And I found out that the major rental car companies does not have cars that have suport for trailers.

The trailer I have in mind getting is a 6 by 12 feet enclosed cargo trailer on a 2000 dollar budget limit. If you know of one or are able to help us find one, please let me know.

So I need to know of a rental company that have cars that I can conect the trailer to, and a loving person that is willing to have the trailer parked on hes/her property while we waits to go back to the next burn.

Thats my dream.
It's like, you got to have a dream to make a dream come true, right..?

You might want to look into a box van instead of a trailer. The advantage being that you don't have to worry about the expense of and hassle of renting a tow vehicle, you also only have to worry about insuring/licensing and registering one vehicle. Keeping the van in ready-to-run condition might be problematic, however I recently took a vehicle out of storage that had been sitting for 2 years by simply charging the battery and changing the fluids. YMMV.

I'm still thinking of a cargo trailer as a good idea, because less can go wrong that way.

So my first problem to solve is to find out where to rent a tow vehicle in the San Francisco- Reno area.

Do anyone know where I can do that??

I got this e-mail in reply from DMV.

Good afternoon.

After some research I have an answer to your questions. Yes you may
register the trailer in the State of Nevada. You will need to show
insurance on the vehicle that will be towing the trailer. I suggest that
you use your friend in Reno address to list on the registration.
Are you going to 'rent' a car in the State of Nevada? or is your friend
who lives in Reno going to tow the trailer to Burning Man? In the State of
Nevada as long as you come to the U.S. with an international driver's
license along with your valid driving license from Norway you will be fine
to drive in the State of Nevada while you are here. I do not know the
driving laws in the State of California so you will need to contact that
State's DMV.

Everyone in the U.S. knows about the Burning Man festival. All the U-Haul
trailer/truck agencies and car rental agencies will NOT rent to anyone who
is going to the Burning Man festival as their vehicles and trailers come
back in poor condition and very dirty.

Try hitting the dmv in Auburn on the way to or from the playa. Small town makes a big difference.

All might not, but at least some do. Hertz at LAX at least was very friendly when we picked up our SUV rental. We asked about whether it is a problem if we go off-road in a desert, etc, and they said that no, driving off-road, parking in a desert and getting the car dusty is zero problem. When asked, we told where we were heading and they just wished us great time. When we returned the car, they did have some laughs over the state of it, but all in a good spirit.

I suppose at least three things could have been in play here: it being a big, prestigious rental office, we telling them outright we would drive off-roads instead of taking a standard rental car out and driving it to a desert without warning, and it being in a state with a reputation of open-mindedness.

I have been thinking about the idea to buy a 12 by 6 feet enclosed cargo trailer.
Since I'm from Norway, I need a place for to park the trailer, and I also need help to tow the trailer to the playa and back.

So here is the deal: I need help from a burner in the Reno aerea to tow it to the playa and back, and store the trailer with the burner stuff till me and my Norwegian burners return to the next burn.

The person that is willing to help us out get to use the trailer the all year exept when we need it for the Burning Man.
It's like, we need to use the trailer for 11 days a year, and the rest of the year is for the burner helping us to use it for free.
We will pay for the trailer.
The only thing we ask for is that the trailer is in good condition and all our burner stuff is in the trailer as we left it when we come back ready for the next Burning Man.

So what do you say to that?

HEELLLOOOO, Tor! Don't worry anymore about storage, ok? Good Old Hagey, at the Burner Hostel, has tricks up his sleeve and is cooking up a little scheme that will provide storage for relatively small amounts of Burning Man Stuff that you and many other travelers from faraway will find quite enticing. Whatever you bring for the 2006 Burn will be safely tucked away for the next Burn V-E-R-Y CHEAPLY! Trust me! I know vat I am doingk!

Our camp has been renting a storage space in Empire at Empire Storage for 3 years now. Their large unit (10ft x 24ft as I recall) rents for $50/month for a total of $600/year. (they have smaller units for less cost).

We rent our truck out of Reno from Budget Truck Rental. U-Haul in Reno does not rent to burning man people. When I told the budget guy that we were going to burning man and that U-Haul does not rent to burners, his comment was that the U-Haul guys are a bunch of idiots, so it seems like budget is pretty burner friendly.

I know you are interested in buying a cargo container, but when you compare the hassle of having storage and renting a van vs trying to find someone to keep your stuff for you + renting a car to tow it etc, it might be easier to just take the storage in empire.
