I don't think it translates as much as it gets 'interpreted.'

Some of the fuckwittery is what people bring up with them in the way of having this idea of the event defined for them by media, second hand info, reports from firends of a friend, etc. I also think that a good number of folks see the Survivle Guide as a a tongue-in-cheek publication that the BM project puts out there to cover their ass rather than a basic roadmap on how to enjoy/experience the event.
