Bartering at Big Burning Bars

Post by Stilesfamily » Sat Jul 16, 2005 4:41 am

05 will be my 3rd burn and I could have sworn that I was told, or maybe I read it somewhere, or perhaps the little gnome that lives under my toilette whispered it in my ear during well, I digress. That many of the bars at BRC would rather barter mixers than booze given that most burners bring booze to barter so they usually run out of the later before the former. Was that an unnecessarily complicated statement or was it just me. Anyhoo, since neither my wife nor I are heavy drinkers so this would seem like a more equitable exchange for us since we don’t have more than a couple of drinks anyway. Anyone have any feedback??

gifting, not barter.... from the envious ornery one

Post by joel the ornery » Sat Jul 16, 2005 9:41 am

mixers and ice are exceptional gifts. read below.

http://www.burningman.com/preparation/n ... _sum7.html
2. Gifting

Burning Man is devoted to acts of gift giving. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value.
and although they can become "moop", i like the little umbrellas for the foo foo drinks.

frozen daquiris are always nice too.

i wish i was going.

Yes this is something that I think is important to just KEEP REPEATING.
The use of the word "Barter" is something that potentially needs to be jumped on quite hard any time it pops up, particularly in BurningMan related conversation in Default World, as barter implies a commercial exchange, and often the general public preemptively misinterprets BM as a barter economy.

Thanks Joel for yet again bringing it into focus. The UN InterNotional Commerce UNvalidation Working Group thanks you.

Barter Banter

Post by Stilesfamily » Mon Jul 18, 2005 1:48 am

Thanks guys, now that I think of it my wife nor I have ever been asked to barter for booze, though we often offered a bottle to the bar. I actually have never been asked to barter anything at BM and we always try to give more than we receive, though many of the people we meet often seem to have far greater gifting budgets than we do. But there I go again comparing, bartering in my own head, it’s hard to free yourself from that mindset.

Lots of bartering goes on but people don't like to talk about it. But now we're talking about gifting as I would never give anything to anyone and expect anything back (unless we're bartering for something, of course and then it's bartering, not gifting). Round and round.

Anyway, I usually just gift and don't worry about getting anything back. I know by now, though, that even if I gift something to a bar, that doesn't mean they want me around. Since there are so many different bars with so many different types of personalities, I usually I try to get a vibe off a bar to see if we're "compatible" before I start gifting. This sounds kind of calculated, but giving a gift doesn't always make you popular or welcome or even make it a place you want to be.

It's all good

Post by Stilesfamily » Tue Jul 19, 2005 12:44 am

I never expect anything when I gift, but I do wish I had the budget and or talent to put together some of the amazing gifts I have been presented with. But as I wright this I am becoming acutely aware that I love all my gifts equally, regardless of how or why I got them or what they are. Coins, Painted tokens or glass pendants with an image of the man on them. Blinky lights, last year I got a Holy hand grenade (which I still don’t full understand), condoms with BM stickers on them and lighters, I got a frozen Otter Pop once and that was a very welcome gift on a hot day from a guy driving around in a Lazy Boy recliner. That’s a good topic, best burning man gifts, hmmm. I think I will start that.

We threw a fairly seriously large party last year, we got mobbed. There was no thought of bartering at our bar, we just poured the booze out like water, but I can tell you that what we kept running out of was mixers, and we would have kissed the feet of anyone who dropped off a big jug of margartia mix.

Ok, besides the already mentioned margarita mix, what other stuff did people run out of at the bars? I don't drink that much so I'm not aware of all the various mixers....having a short list would help me (and others) on acquiring suitable gift items.

mixer ideas

Post by joel the ornery » Wed Jul 20, 2005 9:30 am

mixer ideas:
orange, grapefruit juice (great with vodka)
any powder fruit juice (use rum or everclear for a fruity ass-kicking drink)
lemonade (great for State Fair Lemondade which is basically vodka, lemonade and lots of ice)
diet coke/7-up/Sprite... diet 'cause most don't need the sugar
tonic and/or squirt (grapefruit soda) as a gin mixer.
sliced lemons, oranges or limes... always a nice garnish, and can be eaten to reduce MOOP
and there is always a need for ICE

i hope this helps.

i wish i were going.

We have a "NO BARTER" bar out there. This will be our 6th year with The Liver's End. We tout ourselves as a Friendly Neighborhood Bar. There are several of us involved with this project, and even more, it seems, who like to attach themselves to us. We bring a very large supply to give away freely. It's our gift and we give with no expectation of return. We are, however, very appreciative of any donation (with the exception of money). We seem to run out of juices first (cranberry, then orange, then tomato). Ice is always welcome. Dallas, come by and check out our vibe. We have repeat customers from even our first year who look for us.

On my travels througout the City, I'm always amazed at the people who demand "gifts" in return for what they offer. Bars are not the only culprits. I'm very grateful for those who don't make gifting demands.

Miss Nev - I can vouch for the killer ambiance at Liver's End. We've been neighbors for the last couple of years. (Jungle camp, just beyone camp Impending Doom/Indiana kids).

We'll be glad to bring you some mixers of your choice and ice.

Amen to that on all counts.
Cranberry is really good for the kidneys and UT.
...as a mixer it`s wonderful.
I get the 12oz cans of cranberry concentrate, mix it 1 to 1 with vodka,
(I like to mix these 2 up in advance in a container, 2 cans of concentrate works great with a 5th of vodka)
pour it over ice, with a splash of hot jamaican ginger ale.....and it is very pleasing.....a party favorite around here...and easy.

So does anyone know of a good ginger ale or ginger beer (preferred) that come in plastic bottles (preferred) or aluminum cans? I'm thinking vernor's if I can find it or maybe someething like the jamacan ginger beer or reed's ginger beer. In other word, something with lots of ginger, instead of teh mereest hint that can hardly be tasted paste the sugar and bubbles.

That`s a tough one. All the spiciest brews come in bottles.
I did get a medium strong ginger ale in a can at Wild Oats Organic Food store.....SkyBrand?...something brand....still not as good as the bottles. Think I`ll try the Asian Market for some? ? ?

Well, taste tests last night sez that in a pinch 365 (whole foods house brand) and hansens will do. I had not thought to check Ranch 99--good idea. Wild Oats long gone in Berkeley. Sniff.

Okay, so I was at Dented Cans (aka Grocery OUtlet, aka Gross OUt) yesterday and I succombed to the siren song of a $2.00 12 pack of cream soda. I was sort of thinking that since it has a strong flavor it would make a good mixer. Am I living in some bizarre fantasy? Or will it simply not matter by Friday as the booze goes long, the mixers go thin and people are searching for any mental alteration?

Cream soda and rum! Sounds like a treat to me. Well, by the end of the week, anyway. This from a man who's mixed gin and diet coke. I'll have to ask my friend who's resorted to vodka and pickle juice what he thinks of cream soda and rum.

(short answer: I'll bet someone will drink the stuff).

Do you have a theme camp placement yet? I was thinking of bringing lots of limes and olives. Do people ever drink martinis in the playa?

I love a good strong ginger ale and have searched high and low for a good canned one but none come even close to my favorite, Reed's Extra Ginger Ale. One idea is to make ginger tea (simmer fresh grated ginger in water) but make it super strong and add it to the weak canned stuff. Maybe I'll try that this week and see how it goes.
