Shadow dancing screens?

Post by dragonfly Jafe » Wed Jul 20, 2005 6:52 am

We are going to add a shadow dancing screen or two this year. Can anyone suggest some tips for best effect? We are going to build a proto tomorrow, and can use all the help we can get.

We have some white cotton sheets we are hoping to use for the screens. How many watts of lights are needed? Spotlight, correct? How far back should the spot light be?

Any help appreciated!

not fer nuttin' but I think a pice of spandex strung between a frame of whatver you are using... like PVC pipe. Rebar the corners, and to attach the fabric Just tie knots in the corners (no sew! and no holes!), and then using a larkshead knot and some string to attach it to the frame. Bedsheets might blow around...

of course this prototype is not tested.. and totally at yer own risk.

Maybe an old overhead projector with someone drawing dust or colored sand-doodles on the table and projecting them on the screen.
I saw that once and it was a very cool effect.

you will want a light with a very good focus. One that casts a sharp shadow. Place at least 10 ft from screen.

plain white nylon curtain sheer material works very, very well.

Thanks for the tips...cotton sheets with regular spotlights do not work very well....Ill try sheer nylon or lycra (and a focusing system)...

Oops. Can't do that.

Edit: A video projector would work great.

I like an oil projector, and inexpensive halogen type one with an extension cord that has had a dimmer switch spliced in to it. That way you can adjust brightness (up to very bright) and have interesting moving colors. The oil projectors cost about $50, but make sure you get the kind that can be dimmed (not the ones with a tranformer plug.)

It has to be one light or the others will cancel eachother out. in case that was the problem. Let me know where your camp is because I'd love to see it!

Yeah, I was bummed it wasn't running when I was over there last year. Really wanted to see that.
