Hey - Some people may not appreciate 151-soaked brownies, and if they say "I'm not into that" or "no thanks", I can totally respect that. No infringment on their space, no skin off my nose, no hurt feelings.

<------- My Avatar is a Picture of my gift. These are hand made by me and I have about 200 of them. So I will make sure that the person I am giving it to realy wants one and will not just throw it out or on the playa.
Each one is special to me and I would be very upset if even one of them ended up as moop.

I like blinky lights. Should I not like them?

People at Jonestown were so afraid of freedom they'd rather drink purple koolaid than figure out what they want to do.

I think people should give what they like, not what they think they should.

You don't have to care what I think.

Nope. Apokoliptika.
Which is about as close to heaven as one can get, and still walk the scorched, cursed earth.

BTW - brownie production begins in a while. Been espherimentin' (hic)... If I put a dash of Tequila and Kahlua in the 151 it mellows the flavor out from JP-4 to Ethyl. Plus it seems to add a bit to the kickiness of it all.

It's too bad I can't get an oven out there - I'd love to make these fresh on-playa for our loyal Komrades. Gas would be prohibitive, tho, not to mention dragging an oven out there. Real PITA...

If somebody from Apokiliptika gives you an oven mitt, prepare to have it stolen back. That's just how we like to play.

i had no idea there was such controversy over 'gifting'

it's a part of burning man that i enjoy. all year i collect mint tins and give them to smokers in case they dont have something to store butts in. every year i promise myself that i will paint them and put some kind of burning man emblem on the tins, but i never do.

last year i gave out reiki-energized crystals. this year i am too, and we made some of them into magic wands with beads and ribbons.

i'm a very shy person. sometimes talking to people i dont know is almost painful. if i have a gift for someone, it makes it easier for me to approach people, easier to chat

this is only my 7th year, but i really like feeling part of the community, and gifting helps me to do that

i think i'd feel bad if someone rejected my gift. but now that i've read the reasons why, in this thread, i understand and feel a little bit prepared for that possibility

For bakin' fresh brownies, ever thought about one of these?

takes a little longer than a regular oven, but it'd be a great item to have anyway...

Better idea. Bring some paints/decorative stuff out with you to the playa, and have people put their OWN designs on them. Or have them tell you what they'd like to have on it, if you're artistically inclined and they are not. More interactive that way, as opposed to just 'here, have this thingy I made'.

Still. Much coolness in the idea. Picking up ciggy butts out on the playa is a serious pain in the keister.

wow is burning man turning into bitter man? wow, so much negativity. I love working extremely hard at making gifts to give away to people that I meet. I personally do a limited print run of slkscreen posters, every one of them signed and numbered. its one of my favorite things to do while im there and causes some of the best experiences Ive ever had out on the playa.giving with no idea of return can be a beautiful thing and can be quite shocking and surprising to others. to be able to give someone a gift knowing that they will cherish it and remember the moment that we shared together. I can understand on one hand getting something of little effort , like a party hat that was picked up at a party supply store on the way down. thanks , but no thanks, but Ive gotten some amazing gifts throught the year, jewelry, hats, shirts, art, you name it and Ive kept all the gifts that ment something to me. so the complaints not really "gifting" but to what level you take your gifts. Ive also learned in the past that you really have to be selective of who you give gifts too, beecause a lot of people dont get it and you just wasted the gift on an ass when it could of went to someone who would of really appreciated it.ive found my posters on ebay for christ sakes. Im shocked at all the negativity. bunch of bitter asses. I wont let you ruin my gifts! they are going to be super awesome this year, just wait! if you dont want one just say so, cause theirs someone else right around the corner who would love it.

I think the real gist of it is that we all can agree that you don't HAVE to bring something to give away to be giving at the event, so if you don't have something that feels like, 'Yeah! I really want to give the friends I meet this thing to remember me, because it really suits the occasion/speaks of me/is useful" etc. then you don't have to just order 2000 geegaws to "fit in", because walking up and handing something to everyone you meet isn't a prerequisite to interacting, and you can give in many intangible ways...and we don't *need* to spend money or give an "item" away to have a good time and get to know each other....so leave the little plastic whistles at home and bring your big fat smile.

Put in a jigger of vodka and you might find some takers.

Paper Clip Anyone?

Post by EricMagic » Sun Jul 24, 2005 6:06 am

Would you take a Paper Clip as a gift to you? They are so handy, like for papers or hanging stuff or for burning mini-marshmallows.

Cash? Yeah knowing my luck he'll be giving out Mexican pesos or he came across a bunch of "mills"...I wonder how many people even know what a "mill" is? Or it will be Canadian money or something.

Mill: 1/10 of 1 cent. Used to see them on the bottom of coupons and other give away promos growing up in KC. (IE coupon value is 1 mill)

Yeah. There`s a big numbers racket going on at gas stations using the mill technique. Ever notice how they always charge like 2o9.9....always leaving a mill just hanging at .9 edge ?
Well guess who gets that extra mill that`s left over after you pump your gas?
Have you ever wondered about that?
Well I`m not going to tell you.

wow - an actuall DISCUSSION thread. how refreshing...

my camp mates and I discovered this was an underlying issue.

We actually came up with a companion noun-into-verb of "gifting" -- and that is "mooping"

Not it's not to say that all gifting is mooping, as many previous post have clearly show there is a spirit of truely giving something - tangible or not - that touches both the giver and the recipient.

But last year - we realized -- sometimes a gift is not a "gift"

-- going to the lamp lighters bloody mary happy hour -- when someone leaving "generously" gave me their cracked plastic cup, because I forgot mine -- Was he thoughtful, or just wanting to rid him self of a dirty cup.
(But nevertheless, those were some ass kicking bloody marys!)

-- almost back at camp for the night, and some thoughtful art-car rider throw his glow stick to us... Hmm, was he being thoughtful, or just Mooping us? WHo knows his intent. All I know is that I came back to my tent and trashed it.

But the true clincher! Waiting forever to the toilet at the temple on night (I was seriously delusional, cuz I'm a boy, and only had to pee, and waited 45 MINUTES!!!! - and I wasn't fucked up - just lazy.

This guy comes by the line, and offers everyone a reach into his backpack to retrieve a gift. A playa grab bag -- Except it wasn't filled with gifts, per se. Just STUFF. So my friend got a pack of gum. Someone else got hand sanitizer. But yet others got random pieces of plastic. I mean literally scraps of trash!

So this year, our Leave not trace plan is to try to "gift" all of our garbage to the community in a creative way, so we don't have to take any home. A truly revolutionary twist! Ha-ha (I'm being sarcastic, so this last paragraph is just a joke)
