Cooly Hat

Post by unjonharley » Mon Jul 25, 2005 7:52 am

A cooly hat would top off my M V project. The damn things were at every yard sale. That is until I decided I needed one. Could pick it up on the playa. Please.

I'll keep an eye out at DI, but no promises as I'm going road trippin soon. I did get a way cool sombrero for a buck there ... Chevy's Fresh Mex! I need dingle balls for the brim.

I'm hoping he'll post that link. I've been trying to figure out what everyone is calling a "Cooly Hat" since this thread started.

It's the type of hat wore by " laborers" in asian countries. As in a cooly being a porter or ricshaw person. Servent.

I've been trying to figure out what would work as a BASH: big assed shade hat for months now. I can't find anything I like around here so that's why I've been watching this thread..to get ideas.

One year I had a batch of coolie hats from Oriental Trading; they were too flimsy to wear if there was the slightest breeze. Even with a neck cord the edges would flip up and strangle you. Their cowboy and safari hats look good, of couse you have to buy a dozen at a whack.

Fishing or gardening hats, that's the ticket. I saw lots of Red Hat Society lids on clearance at the local department stores, looked like potential BASHs if you like vivid red and purple. I covet my larry's fishing hat, has mesh sides and a good neckcord. You'll want some airflow, I have a completely sequined shade hat that is suffocatingly hot. I have a trashed old gardening straw hat and the straw sombrero, I even have an Amish straw sunbbonnet that I haven't used quite yet. I've tried the flaps hanging down my neck but personally I find them irritating. I've tried heavily decorated hats, but the weight annoys me. (Queen of fussyland, neh?)

Basics: airflow to your scalp, comfy sweatband, neckcord, big brim.

Amish hats! Duh! There's an Amish general store about an hour out of KC that might have something! Thanks for the idea!

Yep, larry has an Amish straw hat too. Hasn't worn it yet because I haven't put a chinstrap on it. Disappointingly, many Amish hats are made in China.

Larry's hat I like looks like this, only in forest camo:

We did not buy it from them, we got it at a surplus hunting store.

In Britain, a "fanny pack" is called a "bum bag" fwiw.
