Post by queenbee » Tue Jul 19, 2005 5:08 pm

You know those american online pieces of crap that come in the mail. Yeah those! We need 2,600 of them so if you have a few to spare and are in the OC/LB/IE/or LA area hit me up and someone will take them off your hands for our secret project!
The more the merrier! If you want to mail them to us let me know and a mailing address will be provided!
Cheers!

Check local Post Office lobbies for AOL displays. Feel free to take all you want- nobody else is using them!

While we're on the subject of CDs, let me offer this obsevation: A CD fried in a microwave for just a few seconds (like, three to five and NO MORE!) produces a great lightning show....And an unpleasant odor, so do it at work instead of home. The fried CDs end up with a beautiful zapped patina, too.
And to fasten CDs to cloth or greenhouse mesh- Get fender washers with small center holes the size of poprivet shafts, and rivet on with washer on each side. If you don't like the CD being a little loose and wiggly, add one or two smaller washers that fit inside the CD hole.

I did some nice work with cutting cds and adding them to my clothing. But, they tend to have the shiny part peel off. Is it just chosing the proper brands, or is there a secret technique to having them not moopify?

I'm impressed that you can get 'em to cut cleanly....I have trouble with that! It seems like once you cut through the layers it frees up the edges and they peel....It's kinda labor-intensive, but you could tape the edges with mylar tape- Available at places like Pep Boys to make cheapie pinstripes. It's tough but thin, and doubled over the edges it oughta do the trick.
I want to (in my spare time!!!!!!) experiment with fusing and shaping them...maybe to make panels for hanging in the dome. Could just GOOP 'em together, of course....Throw in some army men, shards of pretty plastic and such. I'd like to see your disc(o) garments!

Have you tried scoring them with a matte knife and steel ruler, and then snapping them over a pencil, or table edge?

Nope. Gives me something to live for. Plus my hat is definately something to live for. Finished it this weekend, my husband has already asked me not to wear it in public. Hope to be blinding people on playa on sunny days.

Purple and green lightning bolt type zaps. I didn't have the camera phone right there or I'd have snapped some pics or video of it.

It's really quite amazing, and the risk is minimal. Use a low wattage setting and preferably, a junk or a neighbor's microwave. After that, try a lit match. That's the one that will freak you out.

ETA: these things won't really break your microwave, but they may leave a funny smell or some minor discoloration.

When I was gathering them, one of my favorite things to do was walk into a blockbuster or hollywood video and just walk out with the whole display box of 50+ AOL CDs, or sometimes even ask first. You think the desk clerk gives a fuck?

Seriously I'm on my way to hit up all the local video stores and run out with as many CD's I can. Be on the look out for a photo with a little hispanic girl and an arm full of CD's on the news tonight...LOL yeah minimum wage clerks never give a fuck...Long Live American Society!

Sweet photo Robot! To bad it's just a mini display. That'd be awesome if someone made a whole dome/tent for the playa. Any takers?

What was your project RAnger?

Yeah- Can you imagine weaving a whole Dome Cozy like that? I'm just making a few CD-encrusted shade panels for the dome, and balking at THAT degree of labor....

I was making a beaded curtain for one of my doorways. had to ditch it, though, as it didn't match the decor. Much nicer things hanging in my doorways now. I discovered that you can in fact bend those things if you melt them to just the right temp. Always fantasized about platemail made from CDs.

Note to self. Find Ranger Genius and pry loose his technical knowledge of cd warping and bending. (Whoops, almost wrote bedding.)

A big part of the trick is to apply the heat to the shiny side, since you'll melt and scuff the foil if you apply it to the other side. A cheap iron works okay, as does a little butane torch. Though the fuel for that can eventually get annoying. Tip for those things: if it's the type that stands by itself, you can often remove the stand ring and refill them with canisters of butane from those little butane stoves. Those cost about three bucks apiece and are ten times the size of those lighter refill canisters.
