CAMPS PLACED!

Post by ZaphodBurner » Thu Jul 28, 2005 1:06 pm

Well, my productivity today has officially gone to shit, and I have articles to finish for the Black Rock Gazette.

Zaphod's LZ has been placed at Amnesia and 3:30. (Is this different than 3:30 and Amnesia?)

We are one block from Apokaliptika! Hot friggity damn!

Noticed they've added the street names to the map.
Amnesia, Bipolar, Catharsis, Delerium, Ego, Fetish, Gestalt and Hysteria.
This is two blocks shorter in radius than last year, isn't it?

I'm freaking out. Time for the freakout dance!

Ahh, yes! The targeting coordinates for Camp Apokiliptika are now available. Time to reprogram those ICBM's.

Seriously thanks for the link.

No worries, we have finished the newer, Rev2 Patriot missile battery. Your ICBM's will be dust in the wind....

With all this displayed technology, it will be the humble push up bra and our Interrogation Squad (pictured below) that will spell the ultimate doom to all except the chosen few.

I know, I know, it would have been much simpler just to say she's not the one on the far left and she's not the one on the far right and she's not the one next to the one on the far left and she's not the one next to the one on the far right...she's the other one.....

You may have noticed on the plan that the placed theme camp area
has changed this year. We are excited to announce that theme camps
will be placed in such a way that they literally reach into our
communities, thus freeing up more open, non-reserved camping areas
closer to Center Camp and the Esplanade, the main promenade of
Black Rock City.

In the past, reserved theme camp space has extended two blocks into
the city from the Esplanade. This year we have thinned this region
down to one broad block and lessened the theme camp presence south
of Center Camp.

In 2005, theme camps will extend into BRC at four locations. The 3
and 9 o'clock plazas will feature more theme camps extending for
two additional blocks behind them, enhancing these communities that
have continued to flourish at Burning Man over the last several
years.

Most significantly, new theme camp boulevards now extend from the
Esplanade at the 4:30 and 7:30 clock positions to the outer-most
roads of Black Rock City. This serves to break down the division
between theme camps and the rest of the city, blurring the line
between "suburb" and "city", and creating neighborhoods -- or
sub-communities -- oriented toward active participation.
This whole system sucks ass.

Why should we register as a theme camp if it means risking being placed
way the fuck out near the edge of the city (like our camp was this year)?

If they decide to keep this same setup next year, our camp won't bother
registering and we'll just show up on Sunday or Monday and take a spot a
block or two off the Esplanade where we like it.

I suspect many other theme camps (who got shitty placement this year)
will do the same. If fact, I bet a lot of theme camps in our situation
are just going to abandon their crappy assigned spots and set up near the
Esplanade this year.

If you want to be near the esplanade pony up and get on the esplanade. For all you know this grand experiment may work out and those avenues where you are placed may end up being the shit. Until then, STFU about abandoning your placement. That idea SUCKS ASS

Now, stuart, next you'll be telling sour lemon that it's all good, that if he doesn't give the new layout a chance he'll never know that it works, that it's larry's party and that the old thing wasn't working anymore and all in all trying to be reasonable and to install good sportmanship. Skip to the end and tell him he's not a real burner.

We don't want to be on the Esplanade, just a block or two away like we've been for the past three years. Of course now we're stuck on the outskirts, unlike any random unplaced camp that can just show up and take that prime real estate.
For all you know this grand experiment may work out and those avenues where you are placed may end up being the shit.
You're right. It may work and I hope it does, but I'm not holding my breath.

We're certainly not abandoning our placement. Our dogtags are already printed, plus we want to stay in the good graces of the BM powers that be. But I can't say the same for other theme camps who feel like they're getting the shaft because they stepped up to be an "officially" placed camp. They might not be as afraid as we are.

Last year I did a little roaming in the burbs, mostly just cruising. With the prospects of well developed camps concentrated on a few radials I'm looking forward to having real destinations out on the edge. I think you guys will do alright, there's a lot of people like me.

Chill Sour Lemon, it'll be cool. You'll make it cool out there! DEVO was a great influence on me growing up: those geeks, instead of pretending to be 'cool' and ending up being posers, turned being a geek into something cool! They defined a new cool (IMHO). Now you can do it, and I know you will.

True, true. Like Zulegoona, I also do my share of cruising around the outer rings looking for cool camps. I guess this year there'll be a lot more.

Still, I'm surprised that no one else is bitching about (or even discussing) the new city layout. Or have I missed it somehow?

In case I missed it, what and where is your camp Sour Lemon? Could be something we'd make a special point of seeking out ... or not, but I won't know unless you tell us a bit about it.

There was a (small) flurry of discussion when the idea was first announced 6 weeks or so ago... I think a lot of us are waiting to see how it plays out...

I am looking forward to it...rather than pacing up & down Esplanade 10x each day, now there are different avenues. Same as ever, now it's official for the masses. Should prevent the inverse light effect away from Esplanade also (which will be safer). The city just got 2d for the average joe. I am looking forward to finding out what is there (knowing ahead of time that something worthwhile got placed there). More incentive to go explore.
