After almost 10 years of ALL my friends telling me to go, I finally went and knew what I had been missing........

Don't wait, start living the playa-life.
Start drinking a LOT of water NOW.
Americans tend to be chronically dehydrated, and then when they get to the desert, they take a couple days to aclimate. You can get a jump on this by hydrating your body fully before getting there. It will make those first days that much more comfortable.
