Larry Harvey Contributed To GW Bush 2004 Election?
I saw in the Burning Man financials that the BMorg LLC directly gave the cap of $2000 to the George W. Bush 2004 re-election campaign. In addition there was another $16,000 given to W by 8 of the board members, each giving a cap of $2000 each.
I think most burners would find this patently offensive. Is this where all that extra money is going?

So are you suggesting that we meddle in the political decisions of the LLC staff now? Hmmm. Yeah I don't like Shrub either but if they want to donate to him...perhaps to help grease the skids of dealing with the BLM maybe????, then more power to them.
Not everyone going to the event will be of the same political stripes. And if they are Republican well I kinda like the idea of having people with their mindsets involved in keeping that party from going all the way to the religious right. </soapbox>

Iso, I care because it's just ignorant of the BMorg to have given that much money to the George W Bush reelection campaign!Isotopia wrote:What the fuck do you care where the money goes? Really, it's that fucking simple.
Funny, I would've thought you'd be more upset on all the money the LLC wasted paying your mom to give blowjobs to the DPW. 'Cause let me tell you, after the first three hours, she could barely move her tongue at all.MoisturePup wrote:

That's classified under 'Outside Services:Independant Contractors' in the Afterburn report, btw.

I wish more people had your attitude. Then we could spend a lot less time participating in our event and more time spectating.Isotopia wrote:What the fuck do you care where the money goes? No Moisturepup. Assuming that your declaration is in fact true I'd say that your money - your price of admission - ceased to be 'yours' when you handed it over to the project for purposes of gaining entry to the event. How that money is spent/distributed/invested/wasted or given away no longer entitles you to a say in how best it might be used. Not in this or any other year that you've handed it over. Might be different if you were a stakeholder or on the Board. Might even carry some weight were you aware of this supposed situation prior to forking over the cash. However, at the end of things you've no gripe to lodge. If, as you seem to think, your future monies might be going towards something you find objectionable or disapprove of then you have every right to howl and spend it elsewhere. It was shocking, it was wrong, and it's our money that financed that contribution.
Perhaps Disneyland? Rainbow Gathering? Your call.

The discussion you and I are having, in particular, is an old one. Are we, the participants, supposed to participate in how Burning Man, the LLC, operates or are we not? In other words, is the only way to effect change in things like campaign contributions and art funding by becoming part of the LLC or does the LLC listen to the participants? Does "participation" in Burning Man, the event (not the concept) stop on Labor Day?Isotopia wrote:What logic tree did you climb up into Dallas. REally really really when I suggested spreading wild rumors I had envisioned decadent carribean vacations including eating fresh sushi off nakked babes by the accounting staff.

I'm just tired of hearing that "they" know what they're doing. Are we they or are just them they or are we AND them they which would actually make them us? My head hurts now.Badger wrote:It depends bro.Are we, the participants, supposed to participate in how Burning Man, the LLC, operates or are we not?

It's an art grant for fucksake.
The RNC is building a major art installation in the Anbar province of Iraq. It's called QuagFire.
Have you -seen- the shit that BushCo built in the Iraqi desert? I mean gawdamn. Now that's a fire!
Harvey saw that, how could he resist? If Kerry declared war on a third world desert country and blew it the fuck up, maybe the BORG would have thrown 'em some sugar.

Regardless of the party, I'm distressed that the ORG has enough money to donate to campaigns at all. If they are generating so much surplus with our ticket money, it is clear that they don't need mine. It also makes me a lot less willing to buy a more expensive ticket, knowing that the surplus will go into political advocacy.
For some reason I thought my ticket money paid only for portapotties, BLM permits ect ect. Now that I see some of it is going to non-essential events, I think I just became a lot less willing to be part of BM anymore. It's becoming too much like the real world.

LH (and friends) donated to the re-election fund so that they could use the secret DOD tunnel system and base that runs under the Playa (the one that used to hold the aliens before everyone got wise to them). All those containers hide the access elevator. That's why no one has seen Larry during the event lately - he keeps getting lost in the enormous tunnel system!
(ps- that's also why there is no digging allowed anymore...)

Dragonfly, you may want to go look out your window. And make sure to look up, the black helicopters are coming. And what's the black van doing parked across the street? And what's that noise at the door?

But you forgot the 10 Commandments yard sign. In the words of the infamous Camp Apokiliptika you're fucking doomed.
The battering rams are out and the secret agents should be crashing through the door any second...no wait, that was the neighbor's cat on the porch again. False alarm!

what chaps me about this attitude, Badger, is that it seems pretty inconsistant with the cult of volunteerism. On the one hand folks are told to get involved with the event and to help bring it to fruiition. That is, until someone has an issue with the way things are being run. Then they are told to fuck off and not go or start their own event. Yeah, yeah, come help clean up. Yeah, yeah, we need a couple hundred folks to light lamps. Yeah, yeah, we need cafe volunteers. No, no, fuck off if you think we are doing things poorly. How that money is spent/distributed/invested/wasted or given away no longer entitles you to a say in how best it might be used.
call me baby
For Chrissakes you idiots, has ONE of you gone and actually looked at the 2004 Afterburn report? I mean, I didn't even bother looking 'cause it's obvious MP was just trying to stir up shit, but after people started acting as if there was a grain of truth to this ridiculous story I did look and guess what? Nada. Zip. No contributions to any political party whatsoever.blyslv wrote:Regardless of the party, I'm distressed that the ORG has enough money to donate to campaigns at all.
