Burning Sporran Ceilidh
For everyone who enjoys a bit of on playa kilt-age and is hankering after a real hootenanny then the Black Rock International Burner Hostel presents the first Burning Sporran Ceilidh.
What is a ceilidh?
Ceilidh is a celtic word (pronounced - kaylee) which basically means a social gathering, that often involves dancing. This more often than not translates into an alcohol driven energetic limbs flailing around filled dance floor as people weave in, out, up, down, round, back for 2 forward for 2 and any number of permeations.
Don’t know the moves?
If you throw enough energy an enthusiasm into the dances then you’ll be fine, just don’t stomp on your partners toes TOO much and its all good. Orchestrating the free for all is the Caller, it is this persons thankless task to talk you through the dance before it begins, guide your steps during the dance and pick up what remains afterwards.
Need a dance Partner?
Ask anyone! Seriously that’s what its all about, meeting new people, throwing them under your arm at high velocity, hopefully catching them on the return and then sharing a fine beverage at the end whilst you catch your breath and eye up your next victim...eh, I mean partner.
Dress?
Well obviously kilts are a winner in these situations, plenty of freedom to move, air conditioned and lets all your bits swing hither and tither to the beat. Prefect opportunity to break that new utilikilt in. Formal wear is great although more restricting but the effort is appreciated. All forms of playa wear goes although spikes may be a tad dangerous in such a collision rich environment and I can see fairy wings taking a beating as well.
It’s going to be held on Wednesday the 31st at the Black Rock International Burner Hostel and I am looking for some volunteers who wouldn’t mind learning some of the dances before hand and help demonstrate during the ceilidh. Some fine whisky will be used as a motivational tool. If there are any real Callers or you know a dance or two that you think could be entertaining then get in touch ([email protected]). Finally I would have trouble fitting a live ceilidh band into my suitcase, so if any pipers, fiddlers, drummers, etc that would like to add a live musical element to the atmosphere then that would be greatly appreciated.
Once I know our location and kick off time I will post them up. Come along bring beverages (you will be exerting yourself), some serious shoes and a smattering of Scottish sayings and you’ll be fine. There should be sporrans and whisky for all..OK maybe not whisky for all, but I doubt I will be able to drink all my supplies by Wednesday, still we have to set ourselves some goals.
Cheers

dougaldutch, what a brilliant thing to do!
I am in Europe, so my chances to get together to practice before BM are quite limited. However, should the practice take place e.g. on Tuesday, I would be very, very interested (given you do not expect a long background in Irish dance, or whatever). Which were you thinking?

Ah... practice will probably be on the day during the afternoon on Wednesday, thats houls be plenty of time and no point in trying to be too prepared.
I love that site, oh what a rich langauge we have:
Eagles catches nae fleas. (not sure what it means but it's true)
Him that keeks throu a keyhole micht see what will vex him (I see the definition of keek may have changed slightly, as the more modern saying "I near keeked my pants I was that scared" points out)
Efter cheese, neathing. (got me)
I think I will make an array of badges with different sayings on them, so you can choose a badge and a sporran on your way in.
On a side note anyone know how much alcohol I can bring into the states, read as alcohol as whisky.

Cheese is the dessert course in a formal dinner. Hence, after cheese don't have seconds, don't pick at the left-overs on the table and no raiding the fridge. A Scots' Dr. Phil-style bit of health advice.Efter cheese, neathing. (got me)
(why do I know arcane crap like this? why? Isn't my head full as it is?)
What would that be in Latin? I want it on my coat of arms.AntiM wrote:Cheese is the dessert course in a formal dinner. DD- I like the badge idea....I have pinbacks, GOOP and the makings for stamped-metal tags- Maybe we can connect before the dance and whip some up......(stop by the Parade of Domes, if you've got time!)

After party
Ah, DougalDutch. I knew you would come through with something fantastic! I pledge one bottle of Glen Morange for the worthiest dancers to pass about.
Love your badge idea and I suggest you allow the addtional alchohol to simply appear. I believe US customs is pretty strict on alchohol anyway, and you will have enough on your hands. Does this mean the kilt-off will take place at your event? Sensational!
Other than a shortish guest DJ spot at Club Verboten that night (post punk theme), I am free as an eagle without fleas. If I end up on the later shift there, would you consider a kilted pilgrimage to our old haunt as an after party? I can see the headline now... Stumbling Drunken Scottish Bastards Crash East Berlin Nightclub. We could lead the way with the Mutant Vehicle, regardless of which of our respective camps has stolen it for the night.

Well AntiM that arcane crap you carry around in your head has certainly enlightened me. It makes sense now.
Yeah Robotland the Parade of Domes is on my list, will make some badges before I go as I know even the best made playa plans can go tits up, but we I would welcome at bit of first hand GOOP action. I can think of no greater place for a kilt-off, do you agree?
Ah Jellyfish a kilted pilgramge is always welcome, although what condition I'll be in remains to be seen.

Welcome on board Aldebaran, your my right hand and now in charge of decoration. Could you sort of set up a little stencil or possibly some very small rollers.
Badges....Tuesday.....Robotland....CHECK!
OK heres a query, should I do some proper like invites that I can hand out on the playa or is that encouraging MOOP. Not that I will be handing them out willy nilly to any unsavoury characters or yahoos, but some advice would be welcomed. This would be my gift to the community.

Make them beautiful or functional beyond their immediate utility and they won't become moop. Or maybe you can write it on people's hands.

Personally, I'd love to receive an nice decorated invitation, if it was something that was given to me specifically by some nice person specifically. I'd probably use it as a bookmark and smile every time I saw it until I lost it (eventually happens to all my bookmarks).
Just general fliers frome some goon in a crossroads to every cool- or not-so-much-looking passer-by - thank you but no.
(Sooo looking forward to this, I hope I can remember that it's Wednesday evening when it is actually time. ;))

Janka let me know where you will be and I'll come and collect you.
My initial attempts at the invitations were a little disappointing, I know how I want them to look but my graphic skills seem to let me down. I'll keep hammering at it but if anyone else wants a crack at it feel free the contribution would be greatly welcomed. I was trying to incorporate some celtic patterns, a burning sorran and the details, even that caused me some hassle.
I will print them out on some funky/ quality card and there will be no mass dissemination.

I have no clue where we will be yet, it's on the "sometime before anyone leaves their email we need to decide" -list. Together with "some of these days we need to email the guys who were with us last year". *sigh*
We'll be somewhere in the ghettos anyway, no registering and other hassle for us. I'll try and let you know and if not, I have two good legs under me. :)

How about a tiny "finger kilt" invitation written on a piece of tartan worn as a keepsake ring?

Pause!
United Notions strongly endorses the ongoing fosteration of Cultural Events and International Outreach, see UN Resolution 1178;
"3. There was broad support among delegations for a new international convention on cultural diversity. It was noted that cultural exchanges nourish and develop cultural diversity and cultural identity; they also combat misunderstanding and prevent extremism.
4. Many delegations supported the protection of cultural heritage and cultural diversity, and additional resources for the strengthening of national and regional initiatives that have this aim. A number of delegations and major groups called for the preservation of indigenous and local languages and the teaching of culture and traditions in national education systems."
UNanimous agreement on the above matter was reached in the record time of 4 months and 27 days. No further sanctions have been sanctioned,
and all further debate on this matter has been rescheduled to April 13th, 2023.
Delegates file out.

Trans-splendid! I'll be there with my kilt and oven mitt sporan.
May I host the after-party at Club Verboten? I am DJ (Disk Jelly) at around 10:00 PM playa Wednesday co-hosting "Post Punk Night" with DJ No. Bring your skinny tie to 3:00 and Esplinade and we'll see what your sporan does when you pogo.
