Bartering at Big Burning Bars
At Sakenoma, 9:00 and Amnesia, we have a gift bar and serve over a thousand 1.5 ounce serving of cold sake each year in burnable paper cups. No mixes, cups or anything needed. Just the desire to wash away the playa taste, and there's no better vehicle to do that than cold sake. I dare anyone to disagree. There is something about the mineral content that pairs nicely with cold sake. Better than tequila and salt.
People give us swag all the time. The cool stuff we keep, but some of it we re-gift. What's the word on re-gifting on the Playa. One man's garbage is another mans treasure? Or is it just as tacky on the playa as it is around the holidays?
Sakenoma historically has supported programs to discourage underage drinking and to remind those of legal drinking age to drink responsibly...

In my opinion re-gifting is cool. It's a kind of a gift to the original owner, too, that you find someone who enjoys things she made/brought - even if she never knows that she received that gift. :)
And definitely better to give again than to throw away (and letting it lie in your house, never used and never looked at, is equivalent to throwing away, in my opinion).

Ebenezer,
We LOVE martinis on the Playa! We don't register as a theme camp; we have the belief that people need to look to find us; or stumble upon us. This way, we can open and close when we damn well please. We will, however, register at Center Camp when we get out there. Come find me, and I'll gift you with a sample of my Killer Rum Concoction....that goes for all you EPlayans! This stuff is in hot demand, so be sure to ask!

A lot of that stuff is great as supplies for elementary students art. Dusted off, of course. Around here (San Francisco Bay Area) there are at least 3 non-profits that collect and redistribute/sell the stuff. (Eatst Bay Depot for Creative Reuse, Trashtopia, and Scrounger's Resourse for Resuable ARt Parts.) That last even has a page for how to make your own. Or you can get in contact with old folks homes too. I'm thinking that I will try to get some of it together and take it off the playa for one or more of those groups. but I still haven't firmed up camp plans and I don't know what the room situation in the truck on the way home will be. Also thinking of collecting at decompression. Of course some trash is just trash. I think most of us can discern between that which is cool ,but not to us and that which needs to go to the nearest landfill, stat.Shagy wrote: People give us swag all the time. Re: playa ginger brew mixer
Ismist, thanks for the recipe! I cooked up a batch last night and it is indeed mighty tasty. Not having a playa sun to properly brew the stuff I simmered it for about an hour then stuck it in the fridge overnight. I used only half the cool water and thought it was about the right strength. Either my ginger extraction wasn't very good or my taste buds are nearly dead.ismist wrote:back in 1999 at the burn i made this stuff, and wow.
everyone wanted to use it for cocktail mixers.
try it in a martini...yummm

How do we do that? Can we register on the computers with our real name and/or ePlaya name and location? Can we add our camp as a camp people can come visit? I was going to do the theme camp registration thing but was worried about getting flooded with people and not being able to handle it (or be around our camp that much).MissNev wrote:We will, however, register at Center Camp when we get out there. I'm Back Baby!!
Well, I’m back. Thought I was not going to be able to go for a couple of weeks there but after some financial number crunching and compromises we are back on. Funny, once I thought I would not be able to go I could not bear to hang around the e-playa. Now I am so jazzed I can hardly stand it. Will be in the “Return of Gabilicious” camp within the AEZ, I will be looking for the Liver’s End this year. I have noticed more than a couple posts across the e-playa praising them. Still looking to volunteer putting up theme camps and what not, I know a lot of people need help and I am sure I can just walk the playa and find somewhere to help out but I’d rather help out with those that I have bonded on e-playa. Anyone need anything???
PS will definitely be bringing mixers to gift to Burning Bars.

Re: I'm Back Baby!!
I would make a little list of people and thier camps and then show up. "Hi, I'm Styles family from eplaya and I'm really interesteded in you (ie windmill project). Do you need any help with it or with your camp?"Stilesfamily wrote:Still looking to volunteer putting up theme camps and what not, I know a lot of people need help and I am sure I can just walk the playa and find somewhere to help out but I’d rather help out with those that I have bonded on e-playa. This came out in the theme camp email:
THE BLACK ROCK CITY TEMP AGENCY CAN HELP YOU!
The Black Rock City temp agency, located at feedback loop and amnesia at center camp, will interview potential volunteers and send them to camps looking for help. If your camp could use a few more hands, please let us know how many people you would like, when you would like them, for how long, and doing what---also, let us know if there are skills you need and the address and theme of you camp. We will try to provide "day labor" to needy Black Rock city projects and camps. We will also provide volunteers with a website to use when they leave Burning Man. The website provides a listing of organizations near the volunteer's zip code so the spirit of volunteerism will continue past the burn.

Dallas, at Center Camp Playa Information, you can register your name, your playa name, your camp name, and cross reference. Since we never know for sure where we will be, our first arrivals stake out our space and then register at the info center so that we can all find them. (I never check; I prefer to wander about and check out the neighborhood. It works for me). We have an event planned for Thursday and Friday at our camp. Big Z's Body Dice Game. My cousin is putting this together and looking for participants. Registering at Center Camp ensures that interested parties can find us.

Strong Ginger Ale
Perhaps you can get some ginger root at a local produce store (I can't imagine it needs much in the way of special handling), then use any standard/stock ginger ale. The root will give it the stronger kick, I think...

If I liked ginger that would be a good idea.
In regards to mixers, How about Tang and vodka (yeah), or rum (ehh), or tequila (yuk) or gin (hmmm) or Jack or JB or 7. So much alcohol such a little liver.

Off topic, I was thinking of gifting food out on the playa this year. What’s a tasty and simple treat when wandering the playa? I was thinking of grilling hot dogs in front of some of the esplanade camps at night. I read that someone was making grilled cheese sandwiches out on the playa last year and that went over pretty well. Any ideas?

Thanks. Yeah, we're in the same boat. No idea where we'll be (though we do usually camp between 5 and 7 for some reason). I'll be registered as DallasPlaya in case anyone wants to come get or make a Black Rock necklace (not to be confused with The Necklace Factory which is near center camp somewhere). Hm. I need a unique camp name. How about Black Rock Necklace Company (BRNCO).MissNev wrote:Dallas, at Center Camp Playa Information, you can register your name, your playa name, your camp name, and cross reference.
