where to eat in reno after the event is over
where to eat in reno after the event is over
we always stop at denny's in reno on our way home. it's always crowded with burners and locals. the staff are happy to see us, so we must be great for the profits and tips on that day. but i've gotten so many rude comments from locals about us being dirty, or drugged up hippies, or whatever. some have looked really anrgy, seething. kinda scary
then of course, the whole time we're eating there's a dude vacuuming playa dust off the rug, and mopping the tiles repeatedly.
after a week in the desert i'm DYING to sit at a table and eat a cooked meal and drink ice cold water. where else are people going ? is there another place that has a more open mind about us?

I can't answer your question directly but I have a suggestion: get a hotel room, clean up and live it up. Last year we stayed at some hotel, showered, etc., then ate at benihana and met some cool people (and some other burners). Benihana...ah...heaven.
Edit: Some hotel last year in downtown Reno had a burner-friendly rate and there were tons of burners if you want to hang out with your fellow burners. Anyone remember which hotel that was? It was right next to the railroad tracks...?

There are A LOT of places, dude. But the best places are the buffets. Noone is a local at a casino buffet and the casinos are ready to deal with burners. They won't chase you with vacuums and they won't give you any crap. They just want your money.
Rotisserie is in the Nugget on the way into town. It's damn fine, but I think it's closed in the morning. As you hit downtown, you have a bunch of choices; The El Dorado's buffet is great, Harrah's is...decent, Silver Legacy is pretty good. Baldini's is really cheap and pretty decent - two people eat for $11. It's at Rock and Glendale. Just get off on the Glendale exit on US 395. It's the first exit after the interchange.

Thanks to Addis, I had more free time.

Hate to disagree with Fatsam but it was not the El Dorado but The Golden Phoenix. The management of the Golden Phoenix was quite proud of the fact that they were the first and only casino to develop a Burning Man Package.
Be careful. You can spend all your money in there..............................Oriental Visitor

thanks for the great suggestions! i'll print that out and take it with me.
but to clarify, we're not dirty. we shower everyday while in brc. we may be looking tired and worn, maybe there are pink stripes in my hair, my clothes may not match, that sort of thing. we're obvious burners, and get the heat for it.
this year we'll definately do the casio thing instead. if finances permit, maybe a hotel room too

Oops. Someone else said it was the Phoenix and that sticks in my mind now.Fat SAM wrote:And that hotel was the El Dorado, Dallas. They're probably doing the same thing this year.
It was fun watching the valet trying to park cars covered in leggos.
I guess this decision depends on how far you're going. If you're just driving back to San Francisco and you'd gotten a good night sleep the night before, just drive home. If you're driving 20 hours and you're dirty, get a hotel room and crash.
Alternatively, a lot of truck stops have showers you can use if you just want to get cleaned up before driving home.

Well, those of us staying late may have to do a "second shift" there!
I don't remember how long it lasts but I think it's thru Tuesday. Been a while since I've done that gig. WIsh it were a full week - it's more than awesome - it's like a slab of paradise!

And (the reason I like it so much) it looks like a greasy spoon kinda dive where the food is always good. And the prices are right. It has the "old-style" casino feel to it (remember the Nevada Club with it's old chromie 10 cent slots? - Gawd, I miss that place!)... And yeah, the drinks (not just the BM's) there are good all the time.Dr. Pyro wrote:The Little Nugget downtown. It's near the "Biggest Little City..." sign. It's where the locals go, great hamburger (The Awful Awful), super chili dogs, and their Hangover Omlette is wonderful; and they make arguably the consistantly best bloody mary in Reno. Bon apitite.
What's not to love?

Skooooozi! I resemble that remark!Xvirgin wrote:There's always the dodgy looking indian fish
I wasnt' impressed with the Peppermill (pricey, but then we were there on Friday and Saturday having to leave early) but I'm kind of too fussy for a lot of buffets anyway. Others believe it to be dabom.

Hotel Rooms
I have to disagree with getting a hotel room if you have more than 20 hours to drive home...
The hotel environment is way too sterile after spending a week in the Black Rock. Local campsites or rest-stops are preferable.

My bad. Perhaps it was the Golden Phoenix. We stopped at the Eldo for food last year on our way back in and they had quite the crammed parking lot with dusty cars. I was thinking that it was them. I live here, though, you know? So I don't pay too much attention to what the casinos are offering, deal wise.
Foodwise, though, I'm telling you - take my advice on the buffets. The Eldorado is bitchin', and the Atlantis, though I didn't mention it, I think was voted the best in Reno and it really is the shit. Baldini's is mighty good for the value, though.

We're probably just going to blaze on through on our way back, but on our way to the playa we'd like to stop off and get something to eat... something we can't readily have in the desert....
Sushi.
Is there a decent place to get tiny servings of yummy raw fish in the Biggest Little City in the World? Or are we going to have to get our wasabi fix in the Bay Area before we leave?

The Sushi Club is THE best in Reno, IMO, though I haven't been there in a couple of years. I believe they are on Moana and......shit, let me look it up.....ThePikey wrote:We're probably just going to blaze on through on our way back, but on our way to the playa we'd like to stop off and get something to eat... something we can't readily have in the desert....
