Article about Pyramid Lake

Post by HughMungus » Fri Aug 05, 2005 12:43 pm

Poor U.S. tribe forgoes riches from sacred lake

The American Indians overseeing the lake say such serenity along 125 miles of lake coastline 4,000 feet (1,200 m)above sea level is the result of the tribe's traditional respect for nature.

Others suggest the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, which suffers 44 percent unemployment, should allow at least some development so it can share in the prosperity that regions such as Lake Tahoe in northern California enjoy.

The clash matches economic opportunity cost against tradition, with the sovereign tribe having the final word.

"The historical aspect of the lake has always been to keep it as it is," Norman Harry, chairman of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribes' Reservation, said in an interview. "The lake is sacred to the people and always will be."

cool, thanks Dallas

Makes me think I'll stop at the general store on 445 (the "back" way), just to support the tribe and buy a permit, even though I don't plan on stopping to camp.

And if the folks at the tribal center in Nixon are out selling tamales or burgers, I'm there. It's the least we can do to show our support, especially since the tribe has opted not to go the casino route.

The most beautiful spot on Earth, in my experience. Unearthly blue.

Now, wait a second...

The tribe refuses to allow certain types (or any types) of development, right?

What, they just don't notice that they're all unemployed? They don't get together and do something about it?

I won't be supporting this. Support structures only work for things that will stand.

MrGAJ, i believe they know their employment status. What i believe is more important is they know the pristine status of the lake, and apparently, they (some of them) don't want to ruin it with development.

personally, i am glad they are leaving it undeveloped... maybe we (decendents of western european immigrants) should "un-develop" some of our developed areas.

i personally don't find shopping malls and parking lots to be a sign of "development" as opposed to a sign of moral and cultural decay.

Being a tourist destination sucks. You have to be nice to others constantly because your livelihood depends on it. San Franciscans hate it. I bet Hawai'ians hate it. Look at all that trouble they have in Aspen because the people who serve the meals and clean the floors can't live in a place where the land values are so high. The problem with modern economics is that it is cynical in the Wildean sence. It knows the cost of everything and the value of nothing.

being un-employed doesn't mean you don't have a life.

They have survived and their land is the land of their ancestors!
