Dining on the playa

Post by fetching » Sat Aug 06, 2005 2:17 pm

There must be a thread about food here, but i couldn't find it. :)

that said, what about food?

What works well out there? What doesn't? Are there any foods that one might normally like at home but find they don't want to touch in the desert due to heat, etc.? Are there certain things that are must haves in a playa pantry?

What kinds of foods, are people taking to eat? are you premaking stuff or cooking it there?

I'm thinking of making some soups and chili and freezing them in portion sized ziplocks, then popping them in the cooler before I leave.

other than that, I have no clue how fresh foods (veggies, fruits, breads, etc) hold up.

what do people eat for breakfast? lunch? dinner? snacks?

People are probably going to discover they they don't have a lot of appetite during the day because of the heat. Canned goods will work really well. Really perishable stuff can suck if you aren't careful. Bring stuff that is high in electolytes like dill pickles and BACON. They make a nice snack and replace some of the stuff you lose through sweating. Morton lite salt instead of salt is good because it contains potassium as well as sodium. Dried fruits, nuts, jerky, etc. do really well and are easy to carry in a hydration pack for a quick snack if you need one out on the deep playa. I pretty much graze on snackage like that most of the day and have a "meal" after dark of some canned stew and maybe some canned fruit. Nothing gormet but you can survive on it just fine and it won't spoil if you can't get ice. Say BACON and scrambled eggs that you have frozen in a container ahead of time for breakfast, snackage during the day and maybe a sandwich at lunch, canned dinner.

Oh, I forgot pie. Pie is good at any time.

One of my campmates brought out a huge tub of chicken fried rice last year and heated it up on Wednesday. It was bloody incredible! MRE's are great if you're really fucking lazy (which I most certainly am). I'm trying to find a good Curry recipe that I can freeze and heat out there, cause I'm a curry fanatic. If anyone knows any good ones let me know and I'll grace you with a smooch...promise. Preferably a red curry recipe.

Have you tried Tasty Bite? They have red and yellow curry meals that are pretty good. Easy to prepare, just heat by boiling the pouch in water.
