I dont care what anyone says ... the "real" theme this year is BACON ... and PIE.

Home made popsicles made from unsweetened kool-aid are good too. Hand one to someone with suspiciously large pupils and you will see what I mean.

Funny, I was just trying to convince a friend's wife to go last night. She was worried about "the camping" and I said, "We'll have an RV so it's not really camping. I'll make coffee, bacon and eggs for you every morning. When's the last time someone cooked for you?"

The unsweetened kool-aid popsicles are sooooo cool. You give one to a gently smoldering burner who is just this side of deep fried to a delicate crunch ... and they go Oh, GREAT! And put it in their mouth or maybe even bite off a big chunk of it. And then it is all mixed emotions because it is soooo cold and soooo wet but it is soooo fucking sour. They want to spit it out, but it feels so good ... they just kind of sit there and spin for a while.

You can look at their face and almost see the conflict going in in their mind.

Is there a good place to buy bacon right before hitting the Playa?
I don't think it'll stay frozen all the way from MN, well.....maybe in dryice.

Try Grocery Outlet for the best in discout bacon.
Safeway and Albertson's are the local supermarket chains in much of the west.
There's a 24 hour Kmart off highway 80. It's towards San Francisco, in Reno, so from the east you'd have to overshoot the exit. Actually, you'll have to overshoot anyway from MN. YOu might try looking in Fallon that's about where you leave 80 anyway. (Double check on map, please) There is a walmart there, so I assume there's gonna be a supermarket. Truck stops might have it too.

Actually, Key Lime pie using real lard for the crust topped with bacon strips is "tits"!

There's an Albertsons in Winnemucca off 80 - It's on Grass Valley Rd (aka West Haskell) south of 80 across the tracks (south on 3rd cross the tracks, west on haskell.

Possible Bacon Assistance?

Post by bmix » Mon Aug 08, 2005 8:07 pm

Just a thought, don't know how this would go on the playa, but I'll be tryin' it this year... Hormel makes precooked Black Label bacon, I buy 'em at Sam's Club. Big huge bag, several wax-paper-like things with about 12 strips o'love on each one.

Seems like it would work pretty well, no scorching as it's already cooked, just heat-n-eat.

Bacon, a little mayo, some playa dust... Aaaaah...

That's kinda cool, but it sorta defeats the purpose of the bacon. In the process of the frying, the smell drifts deliciously in the air. Now imagine bacon on a thousand grills ...get one of those cheap foil pans and toss an entire pound of bacon in there. Get creative ... when it is nearly done, drain some of the drippings, add sliced potatoes, onion, and sweet pepper ... maybe a couple of anaheim chilis if you want a little zing. Sprinkle with a little black pepper and serve when the taters are tender.

Use the grease you drained off for scrambling eggs or making omlets.

Just remember, don't cook bacon naked. Grease spatter on tender parts isn't fun.

Naked Bacon Cooking is a fine spectator sport, and one day will no doubt be in the olympics. You just have to warm up first, otherwise you will get hurt!
