Dust masks

While working inside burned building I would wear a partical mask. Some times the odors were unbearable. If some one has died or other factors. Any way I put vic's up my nose. So found out the mask only filter the larger particals out. Then the Vic's got the rest. Started to skip the mask and every thing worked good. So when I went to the playa I used Vic's and no mask. Except when the wind came up strong. Just a suggestion.

Still carry a small thingy of Tiger Balm for the same reason... sometimes these wrecks can get pretty greusome. Once you smell "that" smell you don't forget it...

Finally got a 1/2 mask MSA respirator with P-100 filters - the whole thing wasn't too expensive, and will keep the dust and crap outta the lungs.

BBS, where did you get that 1/2 mask respirator? Last year Badger recommended different respirators and filters but they were a bit pricey...so I stuck with the old N95 multipack of dust masks from Home Borg. I'd like to find something better.

I have one of those respirator too. I bring it along just in case.

H F Have nice painters (charcoal) masks at a good price. You will need extra outer filters for the playa dust.

I just spent a while digging around for an image of the disposables that I've been using, to no avail...They're three-for-about-five-bucks, and fold flat with accordion pleats. More comfortable than the traditional throwaways, and look less like you're wearing an athletic cup on your face.

Most safety supply houses have them, plus you can get them on line (sample linq below). I did that, I think it was all of $25 or so for the mask. I then got a box of 10 of the p-100 filters - it was like $50-something for those, but this way I have enough extras so when the first pair clog out I can change them.

One online source - Google for more choices, tho their cartridge prices are pretty good...

I like the MSA's because they seem more comfy than the other brands. ALso I prefer 1/2 masks and goggles as the full-face ones seem to be hotter and steamier - used to have to use the full face ones at work and I hated them!!

Most important, tho - MAKE SURE the mask and cartridge are made for each other - if not, it renders the whole kit and kaboodle ineffective...

Besides the Vicks solution which I will try, I'm looking for something I can keep in my backpack, doesn't have extra things to fumble around with, and I can put it on quickly. And I seem to crush the N95 filters in the backpack....

And the athletic cup look bothered me too. Back when the SARS epidemic was at it's peak I saw pictures of cool looking masks, I looked online for them but never found anything but the ugly old white ones.

Edit: Thanks for the info and links, those showed up while I was composing my post. It's a zoo over here today.

A damp scarf, clean out of the ole ruck sack in a wind storm will do the trick. Got snot rag, will travel.

I've got a half-finished funky aluminum mask/helmet in my Art Project Pile, which features a dust respirator made from the air filter from a Dodge Caravan. Interesting -looking, but bulky.

It's actually in LAST year's Art Pile! That's how far behind I am! Gotta set a cutoff point....maybe Day 30.

I splurged and bought a Respro mask and extra filters.
I'll probably bring some sort of back-up mask with too.

100% cotton muslin.
2.5 yards of it.
It's cheap, comes w/ own air-conditioning system, and I can wear it as a sarong when it's not dusty.

1000's of years of technology can't be too far off base.

I have big thin cotton scarves, originally used them on the motorcycle in cold weather under the helmet. I hate anything on my face, but can tolerate a scarf. Weird form of claustrophobia, I dislike water on my face so much I never learned how to swim. The gas mask/tear gas day of instruction in boot camp was pure hell for me on so many levels ...

Ok...stupid question...can you wrap the muslin so it offers some eye protection sans goggles and still see, or do you wrap it so it leaves a slit for the eyes? The reason why I ask...I had a pair of goggles get stolen when I went to lamplight last year. My backup pair had problems so the next day I get to ride out the dust storm with nothing. I picked up a nasty eye infection that by the time I got home was so bad I couldn't work for almost 2 weeks. I am determined to NOT have a repeat of that this year. So good alternatives are a must.

I wear prescription sunglasses, so I'm useless. But I have worn a burkha, and you can see right through the gauzy cloth on those, limited vision true, but you can see well enough to navigate in daylight. I imagine it would be much the same as a layer or two of thin muslin. (there's a bad joke in there, neh?)

Here's ANOTHER ONE for the Project Pile....get BIG bandanna (like the old Boy Scout ones) or square of cloth. Also get scrap of flexible clear vinyl from fabric store. cut out eyport from cloth, sew in rectangle of vinyl. OPTIONAL: Roll and tack top to make built-in headband.
Whaddayathink? I'll bet I could get to where I'm whipping out several of these per hour, and they'd make fine, compact gifts.
You could also pop out the eyeplates or lenses from old goggles and GOOP them right to the fabric, cutting an appropriate-sized hole before OR afterwards. Then decorate.

You can get clear/smoke vinyl at Wally world in the fabric section. It is in rolls on a stand with tablcloth vinyl.

Robo, BRILLIANT! Fabric goggles!! If they sit too close to your face you can get some of that round foam weatherstripping they have and sew it into a hem around the edge of the goggles so it will sit farther away from your face. Maybe add some elastic and velcro to secure it around your head.

I just buy big, cheap sunglasses and wrap the cloth over and around my head, with enought cloth in front to fold around my glasses. I call it a kathea, but not sure of the spelling. The underside can be pulled up to cover my nose/mouth, or folded down under my chin to speak.

In the heavy dirt storms, I wear hard-plastic safety goggles with the hinged sides. Some dirt gets through, but not more than can be blinked away. I don't like hermetically sealed goggles, as they make my face sweat, and in an icky way.

Just recently bought two pair of bubble gogs...clear and smoked. Cool looking, and not so hermetically sealed as to cause discomfort.

Especially good over a headscarf, as they use the cloth as a gasket to make an efficient dust barrier! And the clear ones are almost "fashion neutral", for those whose ensemble competes with their comfort-level.

You know those ugly glasses over glasses? Well they have decided to give them some style. $25 but they look good. In eye glass dept. Worked ok last year with a scarf over the face and tucked under the glasses frame. Down side is cleaning them. A buchet with water.

i dont get it... if you're just tryin' to keep the dust out of your body, why vicks? or tiger balm? would plain old petroleum jelly work just as well?
I'm just curious. Vicks and tiger balm just seem a little too mentholated and ravey for me to comprehend.

I was not going for a brand name. It's what I used around rotting/burned flesh. Use what you wish to lube the ole snut. It all works well. The only thing we used petroleum jelly for aroud our house. Was on the bedroom door knob to keep the kids out.

Does anyone know what type of just regular dust mask (PAPER) would be enough for the dust? I want something simple and light....thanks!
